Can anyone help me with this strange problem. I've had Dwarf Nandinas around my foundation for seven years. Some are seven years old and others I've planted more recently. In the past six months, several (some old, some new) have just wilted and fallen over. When I have checked on them, they look like something partially severed them from their roots, however there is no sign of an underground or above ground animal being involved. I'm stumped...any ideas?
Dwarf Nandinas just fall over!
I can't think of anything that could do that besides an animal of some sort. I don't know what sort of signs you were expecting to see, but unless you have really soft mud that should have left footprints, an animal could have easily come in and done damage without leaving any other signs besides the damaged plants.
Thanks, ecrane3. You may be right...but my other Nandina's aren't looking so good either. I did some digging around the area of my latest casuality...I noticed a lot of very small black bugs around the roots. They were iridescent. Does anyone know what those might be?
Any chance you can post a picture? There are certainly some bugs that will munch on plant roots, but the other possibility is maybe you've had a water issue going on there and the roots are rotting, there are a lot of bugs that will feed on decaying matter so that may be why they're there.
