Are there any drawbacks to using rubber mulch or rubber tree rings?
rubber mulch
It'll block weeds and hold moisture the way regular mulch was, but it doesn't decay and help improve your soil the way bark mulch or other organic mulches would. I've also seen some posts saying that it can have some smell to it when it's hot out so you might want to investigate that before using it. And there is some concern that there are some chemicals in it that could leach into the soil--won't hurt your plants so if you're growing ornamentals then it's fine, but if you're growing veggies I would worry about the chemicals possibly getting into them.
Thanks, ecrane3. I can just imgine what it would smell like once we get our usual Bakersfield heat waves. Another problem averted by your prompt reply!
I don't know for sure that it smells--I've never used it, it's just something I've heard so that's why I was recommending doing some investigation. Could be that there are some kinds that don't smell, so if you like the idea of it other than that don't rule it out until you've done some checking on your own.
