Can I Transplant Sweet Corn?

Ozark, MO(Zone 6a)

I planted six rows of sweet corn, each 25 feet long. After it was planted we had a cold wet spell, and I got poor germination in parts of some of the rows.

The seeds were planted 7" apart, to be thinned to 14" between plants. I'm weeding the crabgrass out of the rows now, then I'd like to take those extra plants and transplant them into bare spots in the rows. The corn is about 10" tall now.

Transplanting corn is something I've never tried before. I've got soaker hoses in all the rows, and I thought maybe if I keep the ground good and wet and move a big shovelful of dirt along with each plant it might work. What do you think? Thanks.

Can't hurt to try. Here in Alaska corn doesn't grow well. I do know of one lady in Anchorage (I saw a photo of her corn at a gardening meeting) who starts her corn inside and then transplants them out when it's warm enough. I know it doesn't like to be moved but if it's not to far along it might work.

I do it all the time and have done what you want to do successfully. Corn does not like their roots disturbed. Try to take small ones with lots of soil (I water it a couple of hours before and water the area to transplant).

It will work.

I also start my corn inside in peat pots (larger ones) but make sure it is planted before or when the roots start to peak thru the bottom. Doesn't take long...
