Willie, hydrangeas do great in shade, part shade.
The Long View 2009 - 2
Dahlianut I have moved my Butterfly Bushes around because they weren't flowering well in Part Sun. I think if they get a lot of morning sun and only a little shade in the afternoon they still do well. But it is true that the more sun the more flowers.
love that torch thingie
Its Knipoea(sp) Torch Lily.
I had 1/2 the name right.... I have two in my garden that never bloomed... maybe not enough sun.. anyone know if I move them will they be ok?
Torch lilies like a lot of sun and they are like weeds.
We inherited the ones we have and I have been taking chunks off of these huge plants for the past 2 years.I just toss the chunks into an away space and they get going .
They take up a lot of space ,thats why I want the plants a bit smaller so I can put coriopsis in with the Red Dutch and Shocking lilies.
guess I will try and move them then... even the foliage on them is no where near yours
I cut back the dead foliage in the spring,It hasnt hurt the plant at all.
I'll see if I can find a better pic of the plant.
I swear mine only have a few small leaves coming out of them.... they have been there since early last year
These are over ten years old.
I still dont think they are slow growers.
thanks... yeah mine are no where near that... might just be too much shade where they are.. I grew a bunch from seed... they never returned after winter
I grow some Knipophia (torch lilies... ).... They do grow like weeds here too... (I am talking about the right thing??)...
me trying to grow full sun plants in part sun... only works out once in a while
I do have a spot that I can move them to
Leighton! yes, my spelling is horrible.
The other thing is that there are several types of torch lilies. Maybe you could double check to see if there is a zone rating on the ones you get. Mine are just about to get color in them. I can't wait and I'll get a picture!
Not sure my spelling is right either.>.... lol!! They are really cool plants. Someone was here yesterday and said, "I thought those didn't/don't grow here"... lol!!
Mine are just starting too.
I hover over plants this second year of the garden and snap a pix as soon as 1 in a bunch blooms.
If I would wait a day or 2 to see all the plant blooming pix would be more interesting.
My FataMorgana lilies are starting planted with the echinaceas. I really have to give that area a chance to show off befor I start shooting.
these are the ones I tried from seed

They look beautiful! I'm pretty sure that the ones I bought (and I should have kept track of which ones they were), were hardy to zone 5... Those you have there should do o.k. for you in bright sun. Do you get full snow cover usually? That helps a lot of plants here. I dread the Winter with no snow as lots of daylilies will probably croak and perhaps my torch lilies.
I agree the bloom time is long on these.
They do need full sun as the PF said.
when I planted them usually in fall they were only a few inches tall... and yes most of the time we have snow cover...
the ones I bought were pretty big so my guess would be they would be blooming this year... not looking that way where they are... my guess is the lack of sun where they are... it's a spot I am having a hard time getting anything to grow.. might be the soil as well
I'll get a picture of the Knipophia when it blooms.... I wish the daylilies would be in bloom at the same time but I don't think so. The foliage on the torch lilies is interesting... either of you cut them back after bloom?
Btw... where is Pittsford, NY? My sis was a resident of NYC for 30 years or more..
I cut the dead leaves off early in spring, there are tulips planted close to the plant, tulips bloom and die and the plant grows over the dead leaves as summer comes on.
I am 7 hours from NYC. on Lake Ontario.
Wow!! Never been in those parts before... perhaps, one day!! I'm only 1 hour from NH here... and get to NH and MA fairly frequently. Been through NJ a couple of times on trips with my sister... Wish I had gotten to see the nicer parts of the Garden State. Like some gardens!!
I got to tell you guys... there is nothing like chatting with you with a good cup of coffee and a nice warm puppy sleeping on my lap... Riley is going home tomorrow... going to miss the little bugger
Going home? Are you babysitting or adopting him/her out? Nice to meet you all... and it's very nice that you are early birds!!
babysitting.. he has been here for 2 and 1/2 weeks
awwww I have a few dogs you might like?? LOLOL!!
Beautiful pictures on here... I'll see if I can get a few today...
I got to tell you REM sleep in a puppy is pretty funny... the paws are twitching... and he is making a growling face... must be beating something up in his dreams
LOL!! makes ya wonder doesn't it? lol...
yes always... cracks me up when they start growling and my one always squeaks when dreaming
Lovely pictures.... I like the hosta garden path... and looking forward to my Lollypop Lillium blooming. Looks beautiful there!!
