Its a great way to spend retirement

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice!

So retirement is for the birds?

I finally have something blooming in my fence border. I've had nothing since those two blooms on my new Peony. Don't count the daylilies - they are in pots. I am trying to decide if they'll look good there. When do everyone's Early Mid Season Daylilies bloom? I got these oarticular ones from the south and they are blooming at least a month early I'd estimate. I am trying to only plant white blue and coral here. This is where I put my new Sienna Sunset Coreopsis. I can't wait to see that one bloom. I hope I like it a smuch in person as in the pictures.

very nice Meredith

Thanks. I need flowers that bloom 2 weeks ago in this one. Hopefully the new seedlings of Linum perenne and some blue dragonhead look good next year. I'm pretty sure they'll fill the empty bloom period. Just need to figure out something coralpink.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Meredith I have a few daylilies blooming now, but not many. Mid July to Aug 1st is when most of mine bloom but recently I have tried to buy later blooming daylilies.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

That sounds like what I'm thinking Thanks Pixie : ) There is a place local I want to go take a look at. I think it's getting about that time to start checking it out. Maybe they'll have some I really like that bloom early. Those seem to be the hardest to find in colors besides yellow and orange.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

My earliest daylily bloom is always right around July 4, and I think all mine are mid season bloomers (except some I added last year which should be later). However, I have my DL's in too much shade- the ones I moved to the side of the house get more sun, and those started blooming today, so about a week ahead of schedule. I don't even have scapes showing on some that are supposed to be mid season bloomers, and am getting pretty nervous about those. I'd like to get some that bloomed earlier, but with my light conditions, I doubt that's possible.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thats good info.
I just put about12 DL's in a spoy that is "iffy" for enough sun.
Mini lilies bloomed there and Platycodons but petunias in a container are growing but not too many blooms.
I'll keep my eye on the DL's fro sure.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I think all the cloudy rainy days is delaying everything! I don't have scapes on my Pardon Me DLs yet. Seems a little late to not even see a scape. My Stellas have been blooming well for a week or two. They even seemed to start later than last year. I have some Coral Sunrise Asiatic Lillies in that garden. I think it's weird but they didn't bloom until mid July last year. They were new that spring so I thought they were behind schedule but they don't look like they will bloom until at least then this year too. I am kinda bummed because I like my Asiatics that bloom now and that's what I was banking on when I planted them there.

Nice! Here are my Black Birds

South Hamilton, MA

None on Parden Mw or Red Mittins which are in a shady bed. Very old Crusader has them up next to the house & small early Three Seasons is in bloom. It is usually first when nothing else is blooming. Remember they all haven'g had much sun this spring.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I wentout tocheck again because it was fresh on my mind and one of two large multiplefan plants finally looks as though it has the beginning of a scape. For some reason I thought those ones started earlier than they are. The Red Hot returns right next to them has 6 scapes on it. : )

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Those 'Black Birds' are lovely!!

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Yeah, I hope it's just all the gray and cold days that have delayed the daylilies and that they will eventually catch up. Some of the ones I'm waiting on were new to me last year, so I don't know what to expect with those. I only have one scape each on two clumps of Red Hot Returns, and none on the third clump, which looks like it didn't recover well from Spring Sickness. I know my DL's would be happier in more sun, but I just can't give it to them. :( I guess I'm luck to get what few blooms I do out of them. I've seen the little yellow ones around town blooming for weeks, and just noticed the ditch lilies blooming the last few days.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks Pixie, they are my favorite because they don't seem to be as tasty to the Lily Beetles as my other Lilies.
Noreaster, my Red Hot Returns is probably sighted the worst out of all my daylilies. It doesn't get sun until late morning or early afternoon, but then it gets sun the rest of the day. I will probably move it to a sunnier spot eventually but for now I need it where it is. I hope your daylilies do well for you.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Meredith, do you know what the name of those 'Black Birds' is, or where you got them? They are beautiful! I've been sorely tempted by lilies but always afraid of those scary lily beetles.

South Hamilton, MA

You're right to do so. Until some way is found to control them, lilies are more work than they are worth.

North Augusta, ON

Amen to that!! DH loves those Stargazers and they are plagued by the nasty beetle. my good old daylilies are left untouched though.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I thought daylilies were different beasts from lilies?

North Augusta, ON

They're still a Lily. Stress-free...no spending hours every day squishing bugs and their larva like DH has to.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Which is why I collect both.^_^ One is so carefree that I can spend time on the other's.lol

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I thought they were a different branch of the family tree or something, but I have absolutely been wrong before and no doubt will be wrong again! "Not a true lily" whatever that means - I don't have the foggiest idea. They have different leaves. Anyway I sure do like those Black Birds, which I can't find in Plant Files.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Lily is a bulb and daylilies have roots, if that helps.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Daylilies are not lilies at all. Different genus, different family. Different country club.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Meredith, my Red Hot Returns and the rest of my daylilies would be THRILLED to get as much sun as your RHR gets! lol Yeah, my poor daylilies really have it rough. But I don't care if they're happy- I'm happy if I get a couple of scapes with some blooms and that's all that matters. And the colors are pretty in light shade, I think. I probably won't get to it this year, but I am planning on moving a lot of them to the side of the house, where they will get morning sun and full sun up til 1 or two. The ones that I moved there last year went crazy this year, so I expect most of them would do well. Unfortunately the side of the house is not all that big...

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Different shoe size?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I use Bayer Rose and inect spray.Rarely see a beetle.
I also use liquid Sevin.
No squishing here, my lilies are beginning to open and look great.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Me too Jo Ann, I do what I have to.
'Kiss Me Kate' opened yesterday in the rain, this is my 2nd year w/it and I like it more and more.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Pictures, please?

OK..here she is.

Pretty, Celeste. I may need to consider lilies after all, beetles or not.

I have been loving everyone's long views!

I don't really have much of a "long" view, but if I catch it just right, it looks like I have miles of nothing behind me.

Certainly not the VERY busy and bustling, major intersection (including major thruway exit) just around the corner of the block.

This is the view, sitting on the "patio," which is really just what I call the garage when I lift the back garage door, opening it all to the yard. Here we are facing SSW.

Come! Sit in the shade for a spell, the iced sun tea is fresh from the greenhouse.

Taking a few steps forward of this photo is the veggie patch, you may have already seen.

This shot is facing almost directly West. Toward that busy intersection.
