basil seedling transplant?

New York, NY(Zone 7a)

I think I read an article on this site that deals with basil seedlings and transplanting seedlings in clumps. Also had some information that you could transplant similar to tomato seedlings, planting most of the stalk up to near the true leaves under the soil. (roots will develop out of buried stalk)

I have a seedling tray of basil that's crowded and over do for transplanting, and this info. would be helpful to utilize.

The article is from Dave's garden:

Basil is a member of the mint family and therefore is one tough plant. Lift the overcrowded clumps out of their mix and gently seperate them and replant. I cant think of any advantage to planting a 'clump' of them and then having to cut most of them down later to prevent overcrowding.

I ended up separating almost all the seedlings, a few I kept as a 2 or 3 group clump.
Hopefully the replanting with the stem deeper than it originally was is o.k. (similar to tomato's)

I plan on "hardening off" these for about a week, then many will be given away to friends all ready for them to plant outside (way too many seedlings for my use). Mine will be going into pots outside.
