I planted 50 pounds of Yukon Gold on March the 11th. I'm in zone 7 and we've had a cool wet spring. I have only had the occasional bloom so far. Should I be concerned?
Thanks,
Carol
Blooming Yukon Gold
no
cpredhead - you must really like potatoes to plant that many. I used to eat lots of potatoes, but now that I'm on a carb-restricted diet for the rest of my life I have to rely on memory as to how good they taste.
This is posted in beginners, but I have grown many potatoes in my life. Yukons are new. I am actually growing to sell.
Farmer Dill, should I expect blooms and how do I know when I can dig "new potatoes"?
Thanks,
Carol
Sometimes they bloom, sometimes they don't. Yukon Gold is not an avid bloomer. does not effect yield in either case. My criteria for new potatoes is when the plants start to falling over. I do scratch ( gravel or grabble) around the first few plants to insure that potatoes are large enough, before I damage the plant. You can take out new potatoes with harming the plant. If you are selling new potatoes tho you will probably want to dig them as soon as they get market size. You will cut yield but get a premium price altho most folks here want "red" new potatoes..
