HI, NICE TO MEET YOU ALL.
STRAIGHT TO THE QUESTION
I HAVE DECIDED TO GROW NASTURTIUMS FOR THE FIRST TIME, I HAVE GOT HUGE LILLYPAD TYPE LEAVES ON THEM BUT NO FLOWERS. IS THIS NORMAL? DO THE FLOWERS COME OUT A WHILE AFTER THE LEAVES?
GLAD OF ANY HELP.
NEED HELP WITH MY NASTURTIUMS
Did you start them from seed? The plants will definitely get leaves before they get flowers, that's perfectly normal. I've never grown these from seed so I'm not sure how long it typically takes to get flowers, but it's still early in the summer so I doubt there's any reason to worry at this point, the flowers will come when the plant is ready.
I lived in Lincolnshire, UK and grew nasturtiums. When they bloom you will have a beautiful display. The problem that I had was small worms that destroyed the leaves of the plants. I am not sure if there is anything that you might be able to spray on the plants to get rid of the worms, if you even have them in your area. If you do, try washing up liquid in water and spray with it.
Thanks for your reply ecrane3. yes i did start them from seeds. just put them straight into the ground and they have gone mad, leaves everywhere but no flowers.
thought they had maybe come up blind like daffs do sometimes.
thanks for that m/e. i haven't noticed any bugs as yet but will keep a lookout for them.
Never heard about washing up liquid in water before but will give it a go.
My experience last year with nasturniums from seed was indeed...big showy leaves...then maybe 2 to 3 weeks in...blooms...then bugs. I used a mild biodegradable oil soap spray on the bugs that worked great. (Murphy's Oil soap)
I had to really look for the blooms at first cause they get nestled into the leaves like squash blooms.
well my nasturniums are beginning to bloom now and look lovely. no sign og bugs yet. do i have to put new seeds down each year or are they likely to re-grow each tear?
I have nasturiums that I started from seed 3 years ago. Mine are planted in full sun, but they like consistently moist soil. Mine bloom prolifically and reseed themselves 100 fold each year lol! I literally have to pull out handfulls of lil baby plants that spring up all over the place each year!
If yours are flowering now, they will soon set seeds :oD
thanks 1AnJL, will keep a lookout for that. is it ok to take new shoots up now as friends want some or should i wait.
not sure.... I dont transplant them as I have too many already but maybe someone else can answer....
well i have to say growing nasturiums from seed has been a great sucsess. i would recomend growing from seed to everyone. i have had and still having a splendid display. i have to cut back the green leaves every so often to let the sun in, but it is well worth it.
go for it next year, give them a go.
Did you use a metal nail file to rough up the seeds first before you planted them? This was my first year planting nasturiums and I read somewhere to do that and mine have tons of flowers! Good luck!
rachel
All I know is that nasturiums don't like the heat, so I plant them very early in the spring (February) and they don't like being transplanted. I just started mine in peat pots and put them in the ground.....try all kinds........there are so many great cultivars. I treat them like an annual.
