*Hello, I am a newbie and just planted my first flower garden probably around the third week of May. I planted a Peace Hybrid Tea Rose bush in the garden but it hasn't started blooming flowers yet. They have buds on them just nothing yet! :( Does anyone know when these roses will start to bloom? The tag on them says they are summer flowers, so will they start to bloom once Summer is here? (I am in Ohio). Thank you.
*First Timer With Roses*
I don't remember when roses typically start blooming in Ohio so it may just be a little early, but when you first plant perennials and shrubs they usually take a while to get their roots going first before they'll put energy into blooming. If they had buds already when you bought them they may even drop those buds while they focus their energy on the roots, so I wouldn't worry too much if they don't bloom much or at all this year. If they get established quickly they may give you some blooms but it's nothing to worry about either way.
remember that roses are heavy feeders too. I usually plant mine in Black Kow (a composted manure) and bone meal and then within a couple of weeks, start with Peter's walter soluable fertilizer (Miracle-gro will do). 2 weeks later I use Bayer's two-in-one rose fertilizer which keeps the insects down and continue with that about once a month.
I have a hard time with roses because I don't truly have 6 hours of sunlight but I moved them and they are doing better.
They take about three years to really put on a show.
Hi Peaches. I'm here in Bay Village and my roses that I planted last year are blooming now. Don't be discouraged...I planted them about this time last year and had a couple of blooms last summer too. This year they really took off and are going nuts. (I'm a kind of hands off gardener..I have a compost pile for amending the soil...and only add couple of banana peels about 6 inches away and down on my roses beds)( Probably an old wives tale but it's a great way to recycle banana peels!)
No, the banana peels really DO help. I also use coffee grounds.
