June Flowers OT

Oh Nichole,they are so precious!!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

They are fantastic! And so understanding, as far as where the animals have gone.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

syrumani...on tomatoes common wisdom is just under 7 is best. Your children look so cute snuggled in their beds. Always sweetest when sleeping ^_^.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Thanks, GL . . . I'll keep that in mind for when I do the hand watering! ^_^

(Zone 1)

All the scientific stuff about growing is sooo way over my head, so I know I'd never be able to grow for show ... I just don't have the patience to try to get everything right. Thanks for the graph showing nutrients etc. GL! I found this old DG article regarding soil ph that is interesting: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/9/ I just wish my brain could retain all the good information I read here. Alas, it goes in and evaporates rather quickly! ^_^

Jmp24: Great photo of Digitalis purpurea, I thought it looked familiar ... I remember those from my childhood in Virginia. That is a beautiful plant! You should add your photo to Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=digitalis&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

Hi! I had to tease you all and tell you I had my first tomato sandwich and it was yummy! LOL.

There was a older farmer selling canterlope on the side of the road the other day and we was talking about growing tomato's.He told me all southern states soil lacks magnesium in the soil.He said everytime time I water to throw a handful of Epson salts around the plant so it gets watered in.He told me to do that everytime and I will get good tomato's growing in the ground. It's worth a shot for me cause I can't grow tomato's in the ground here.Just thought I would pass on this info.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Hello everyone! I am back home and can't comment on everyone's great pics and stories.............too tired, but I love tomato sandwiches better than anything in the world.

GL.....Pink primrose is a wild flower here......one of our most predominant ones. Since we have been in a drought we didn't get them this year, but when I have I am going to find a picture from last year to show you how they cover the ground everywhere.

Nichole, I use epsom salt on every plant I grow outside..............plus a lot of Iron and Nitrogen..........

(Zone 1)

Jan ... great advice! I think if it ever stops raining I will go out and throw some Epsom Salts in the direction of my tomato plants that are in the ground! I don't think there's any saving the ones in the container ... the plants took a turn for the worse and look real sick! MY FAULT! I mixed up a batch of the beer fertilizer a few weeks ago and used it for watering a lot of plants, which was fine.

Only thing is ...I have a bunch of gallon jugs I mix plant food in and the beer fertilizer was in one of the gal jugs, clearly labeled with permanent marker: ADD 1 TBSP TO 1 GAL OF WATER! Guess what I did? I picked up the jug with the beer fertilizer solution and poured it directly into a few plants before I realized what I was doing! I completely flushed the soil of the few plants I think I used it on but apparently missed the tomato containers! Arrrgh! Am I a dingbat blonde or what?!@% ^_^

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, if this will make you feel better, I followed the instructions on the label of Seaweed Kelp of 11/2 tablespoons to a gallon of water and watered everything in my house........all streps............all 17 containers of strep leaves!!!!! I have been out of town all week long , just got home and think I burned the root systems so badly I am going to lose at least half of what I have!!!!

I have no one to blame but myself. The girl taking care of my plants let them get waaaaay too dry, but I can tell lack of water is not what caused the damage. So,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,now I will probably have to find one good leaf and start over...........oh well.........what else do I have to do. (LOL)

There is one bright note...........the same seaweed treatment to my big big streps didn't even make them flinch........so at least I have my new ones for sure.........plus my other big ones..........

NOW I KNOW BETTER THAN TO EVER DO THIS AGAIN.........I would imagine they could live without seaweed kelp but if I do use it, I will most likely use 1 tsp to a gallon........maximum......

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Oh, Gail, that's too bad! But, like you said . . . you do like to propagate!

(Zone 1)

Gail, at least it was our own mistakes and not someone else who tortured our poor plants! LOL. I once mixed too much fish emulsion in water and fed my plants too ... someone told me you can't use too much fish emulsion, it won't harm anything, but my plants suffered that time too! I had mixed it in the water and then couldn't remember if I had put enough in and added more. Geesh, you'd think I'd learn!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

What I am really afraid of is that when plants get damaged it makes them so vulnerable to everything that comes in the house..............will make a decision this weekend as to what I can save a leaf from and what goes in the trash...................

What in the world was I thinking when they were just beautiful last week.............

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

a couple of wild flowers last year......no rain this year

The primroses cover the yard and fields everywhere in early spring.......

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh my gosh, Gail! I am so sorry to hear about the Seaweed fiasco. If a product label says to use X amount per gallon of water, always know that for gesneriads it will be much less. Exception being if it's a product especially for african violets. At least the big streps look good. I'd be tempted to do some flushing with water asap. What a huge job though with all you have. Letting the plants get dried out after the too strong seaweed application didn't help either.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I watered but didn't over water..........but think you are right in saying maybe I need to really flush them very well as soon as possible. Will need to go to town and fill up my jugs with the reverse osmosis water at the grocery store......................will definitely do that...........for sure. Thanks for the help, GL!!!

Want to know what a real ugly strep that has been burned looks like? Let me get the camera for you all!!!
Granted I am taking examples of the worst ones.............just so we can all learn from my giant mistake........

Now, GL.........is there anyway to save these? If I flush them and trim the leaves way back , are they even worth it?

Thumbnail by gessiegail
(Zone 1)

Gail, they don't look too bad to me at all but I don't know squat about growing Strep's, LOL. If you cut the leaves off, will they re-sprout?

edited to say: You are such a good grower, even what you call your bad plants look pretty good to me!

I wish I felt as confident as you, Lin (LOL)

Guess I know what I will be doing Saturday and Sunday........trimming leaves, flushing plants and saying a little prayer that they put out new growth..............

GL is so right in saying that unless it is something just for african violets, I better really dilute the amount used to a gallon of water.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

I am so sorry for how your streps look. Oh my..well as you say, it's good learning experience. If they were my plants, I would cut off all the damaged part down to where it is green and healthy looking after flushing to dilute and get rid of that seaweed as much as possible. The good news is they should make new growth. I know you meant so well and love your streps.

I have burned baby streps before and could have kicked myself. They looked ugly for a while but grew out of it.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Oh Gail,
I am soooo sorry about your beautiful plants!! I am not the expert GL is,but by the looks of them a good flushing or in some cases repotting should save a lot of them!! I sure hope so.
The biggest problem was probably the fact that they were too dry when they were fertilized,a big no no.
Lin,
I feel for you! We all do these things sometimes. My worst experiences have been with fish emulsion. It's a great fertilizer, but take care.A friend of mine grabbed the wrong container and sprayed all of her tomato plants with Round-Up.She missed out on Jan's sandwiches for sure!

GL,
You posted as I was typing LOL. I am a slowpoke.Great advice!!

I always, always dilute all plant food. The beer formula fertilizer calls for 1Tbsp per gallon of water but I dilute, dilute and dilute that too ... it was pretty strong pouring the straight stuff right into the plants ... luckily I had not doused too many before catching myself and flushing with the hose! Thank goodness the only plants that still show distress are the tomato plants in containers, I'm pretty sure they are not going to survive but that's okay because they were being eaten by cut worms or something anyway and tomato plants are cheap and can be planted almost any time of year!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the encouragement..............I appreciate it!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Go for it Gail--those look quite salvageable to me--Commence flushing!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I like those orders of 'Commence flushing' (LOL)
I just repotted all of them so I can't repot..........just don't have it in me...........but I sure can flush each of them...........and trim some leaves, etc.........

I am so grateful that the larger ones weren't even affected to the naked eye............

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I think I am going to be able to save my streps................they aren't pretty now, but better than they were earlier when I showed you photos of these particular ones.............they have now been flushed and are draining in the sink and on the counter for the night.........

amazing how much it helps just to cut off dead leaves.............we shall see

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

these were from the same two trays..........and can tell that the larger they were the less damage to the leaves they suffered..........

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just realized that this has been on the wrong thread all along.........sorry 'bout that, Folks!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Gail,
They look fine!!

(Zone 1)

Gail: You have ten green fingers/thumbs ... and probably toes too! LOL. You are such a great plant mom, I know that your Strep's will recover and probably look even better than before if that's at all possible! You grow so many plants so beautifully!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have one more question and thanks!!! I have to take my little step sister with severe dementia to the doctor all day today.........(in Corpus Christi). Should I leave the lights off today until I can get all the streps flushed out? That can't happen until tomorrow as I don't have any time today.........

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

I would prolly leave them off--won't hurt for one day. And would slow any absorption of anything toxic

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

sounds good to me!!

Wytheville, VA

Gosh! Is it JUNE already?
My streps are safely installed in their new mini green house, my corn is up, potatoes need hilling, beans are in, spinach has bolted & I am still planting dahlias! My garden that was pristine last year is overgrown. No weeds either.
I have way too many daylilies, bee balm, forget me nots, poppies, & pansies.
If I find my camera , I will take pictures.

PS. I think we should plan a bus tour to my house. Everybody bring a spade and some buckets!!!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Enjoy the wealth! (I'll be there by dusk...What's for supper?)^_^

Wytheville, VA

ahhhh! strawberry shortcake! freshly picked.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm! I'm there! Here's my Hostess gift! LOL!

A box of micro-mini's...

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Oh,so pretty Jan!!

Medford, NJ

Ooooh...look at those micro mini's! Someone just gave me a few, I hope they make it for me (Mini Minx, Baby Brian) and one of the ladies here very generously sent me some rooted good size mini's, including Opt. Little Jade and Rose Quartz. Rose Quartz was even blooming!

Mini Minx and Baby Brian are unrooted crowns, so I have my fingers crossed they will root for me. I have them in tiny just a little bigger than thimble size plastic butter cups from a restaurant. I also got Woodland Sprite and Pixie Blue crowns. I am right in assuming that only Mini Minx and Baby Brian are micro minis, and the rest are regular minis? Also, does anyone know of a site that has good info on mini care? I really haven't found much info on them.

Gail, your pink primrose are gorgeous! We have them in our yard, in a very vibrant yellow..I think they are trying to take over. Sorry to hear about your streps, I try not to read strep posts too closely, as I don't want to get too interested in them.....

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Sounds like you got some nice violets! Here's a good resource...

http://www.reedsgreenhouse.com/microminis.htm

though the optimaras are not considered Micro-mini's by most growers--they can be grown as such. I would love to talk about some trades with you once your mini plants are established!
