? about pollination process

Pilot Point, TX(Zone 7b)

I have planted a few different varieties of squash this year. Along with my zucchini I've got some "sunburst" and also "calabasas".

Does the pollen from one variety affect the other ? ie; I mean if a bee goes from one plant to the other bringing one plant's pollen to a different variety...does that change the fruit in anyway ??

Many thanks...

Hi, Jann.

A simple explanation:

If cross pollination does occur, you will not see any effect in the fruit your plant produces this time. If you grow open pollinated and/or heirloom varieties and want to save seed, that is where you may run into a problem. Seed that has been crossed will produce plants that are not true (identical) to the original.

If you grow hybrids or don't plan to save seed, no worries.

I'd like to add that corn is affected. Any veggie where the fruit is the "seed" itself can be affected by cross pollination. Otherwise everything else locakelly said is right. Cross pollination only affects the next generation of seed.

Agree with Qinx. Thanks - I forgot about corn!

You know, Qinx, I'd take you up on that offer, but I've got squash coming out my ears!! My neighbors see me and they run to lock the door - lol!!

LOL. I know what you mean. I was just making fun of all the plants I have!
