It wasn't dark when I took these photos, but it must have been close enough that the flash was needed.

My plants are 30 years old. I started dividing them probably 20 years ago. Once they are established, they will multiply rapidly.
This is a not so good picture of the bed that the stokesia is in. Back row. I divide and give away every year and this seems to make them multiply more.

I received this last year in a bulb trade but the ID on the tag has already worn off. Something is bringing the name "Apricot Ruffles" to mind. Does anyone know if that is right?
I love the white stripe down the center of the petals.

CoreHHI,
Do your elephant ears freeze to the ground in winter? Down here we have to be careful that they don't overrun everything. What is the lovely plant on the very left?

Leslie

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Yes mine will freeze back if it gets cold enough and I do thin them out. On the left is a pink turks cap then it's banana cannas http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/37145/. I planted those where the gutter runs off so they get a good amount of water and seem pretty happy there. By the end of summer they should be about as high as the roof.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Leslie, some of the colocasias like esculenta and the purpley looking one (can't remember the name) will indeed run all over the place. Other EE's like most of the alocasias are well behaved.

So, this is what happens to you if you decide to snack on my tomatoes. A bitter, gory end.

I was joking the other day that I'm going to start a garden entitled, "Plants That Look Like Pot"

First entry, Haight Ashbury' (Hibiscus acetosella)

Also (not pictured), okra and swamp hibiscus.

Major league thug. Ardesia told me not to plant it. The honeymoon isn't over, yet, however. I still like it. Clerodendrum bungei.

Crinum I pilfered from Ardesia last year.

So are the crinum finished after one show or do they keep at it? I've never seen a varegated acetosella! what color are the flowers?

X

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

The crinum just keeps putting up one bloom stalk after another. It's very cool.

I hadn't seen a variegated acetosella, either. Alice (Ardesia) and I are both members of the Charleston Horticultural Society and they had a members only plant sale at a wholesale nursery on John's Island a couple weeks ago. We came out with 6 flats of plants. It was awesome!!!! Some really unusual plants.

All that to say it blooms a deep burgundy that's hard to pick out from the foliage.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

This is a Haight Ashbury flower from 3 years ago when I had that plant. I really zoomed in close. The flowers are about 3" across and they blend in so well with the colorful foliage they are hard to spot.

I have a swamp hibiscus and someone did stop dead and stare at it. LOL>

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I had that happen and people actually knocking on my door when I had a brugmansia out front .. apparently no one in the neighborhood ever saw one before ... the first words out of their mouths are "that's the biggest flower I've ever seen!"

I have a Vitex (Chaste Tree) that has the most feathery leaves on it, definitely looks like Cannabis!
I have another that also has similar leaves, but thicker - sorta like the difference between a regual Japanese maple and one of the lace Leaf ones.
I will try to get a picture tomorrow.

I have Hymenocallis Peruvian Daffs blooming now and I had a lady ring my doorbell and ask me what the heck that was!
I gave her my phone number and told her to contact me in the fall and I would give her one. LOL I just got them in a trade, and they are already blooming. So hope to be able to share those soon.

I THINK that this is the type, but it may be a different one - looks like this one, at least

Thanks Ardesia. I'd love to put some in my new bog garden.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Chaste Trees are used as parking lot trees around here so people know what they look like. LOL.

Chapin, SC(Zone 7b)

Why are they called Chaste Trees?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

......some interesting thoughts on why they are called "chaste" trees.
