Garlic

Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

Ok my friend has given me a couple of garlic cloves she has had sprouting. I'm just wondering...once I've planted them and once they've started to grow how can I tell if they are ready? Can I tell just by looking at the green?

thanks :)

Not really... they turn yellow and start to fall over, like spent tulips or daffodils. Then you can dig them. Garlic is best planted in fall; it will sprout, then seemingly die back for winter, and grow properly come early spring.

I harvest when the leaves are 1/3 to 1/2 browned. Usually early August in New Jersey, USA.

As a suggestion, you can promote bulb growth by cutting the scape once it has curled. Personally, I find more use for the scape than the bulbs. I chop it with oil in a food processor (remove the seed pod). The resulting pesto-like sauce can be stored in the freezer. The uses for it are endless so feel free to experiment. I have used it mixed in cream cheese for making dips, mixed it with eggs when making omelets, and added some to sandwiches.

Brilliant, thank you both :)

This website talks about growing garlic in Texas, CA, and the rest of the US, but it has some really good information about knowing when your garlic is ready to harvest and how to cure garlic.
