Adding 'lime' to raise PH can you plant right away ?

Pilot Point, TX(Zone 7b)

I'm creating an asparagus bed and have been preparing my sandy soil with some compost and greensand. I did a PH test and it only registered a "4". I understand that asparagus need a '7" or higher.

If I add 'lime' to the bed now....is it OK to plant the asparagus roots right away ??? I know that I'll be waiting a year or two+ for the asparagus to properly develop....but wondered about the time it takes the lime to raise the PH. ????

Many thanks...

4 is extremely acid. You should retest to make sure it's really that sour before you add the lime. I don't know how to calculate how much lime it would take to raise the ph 3 points to neutral 7.

Thanks for your response Frank. That's what my neighbor said too --- she's been TRYING to get some of her soil to do this for her 'blueberries'.

I had just tilled this new asparagus area with some compost and green sand -- not sure if THAT's why I got such a low reading. My neighbor is going to bring her PH meter over and test in my asparagus plot just to compare.

I've had my asparagus crowns now for 3 weeks and I've got to get them in the ground...so I think I may add some 'old dirt' into the mix to see if it brings the PH up some. --??--- Not sure what else to try ?? Apparently you have to wait several months after adding 'lime' . --??--

....

Edited to add:

OK -- just found out that I was reading my meter incorrectly --- duh. My soil is a '7' --- which is perfect for the asparagus.
