Rooting Hormone

Lewiston, ID

I recently read a discussion thread in which someone was a little alarmed by the warnings on the label of his/her rooting hormone package, so they "chickened" out. I did the same thing. What alarmed me however, was the number of people who said they didn't know what warnings the original poster was talking about. Granted, the Schultz brand of TakeRoot does not put the warnings on the 'outside' of the label --- you have to peel the label back to reveal the warnings and precautions. Here is the MSDS sheet for the active ingredient: http://www.sciencelab.com/xMSDS-Indole_3_butyric_acid-9924364. Looks like Schultz no longer carries the product TakeRoot, but the back of the label clearly outlines precautions, with particular regard to disposal and contamination risks.

Please be responsible and know your product before use. You will be doing yourself, your family and the environment a favor.

Rooting hormone is definitely something to use proper caution with (as is any gardening chemical!) Even if Schultz no longer carries that product, there are still plenty of rooting hormone products out there, most of which use the same active ingredient (or other things that are chemically very similar). Keep in mind though that the MSDS you linked to is for 100% indolebutyric acid, and the concentration of it in rooting hormone is much lower (even Dip n Grow which is meant to be diluted before use only has about 1% of it, and the products that come pre-diluted and ready to use would have 5-10 times less).

Unless you're buying your rooting hormones from a place like Carolina Biological Supply, they are probably degraded and inactive.
Rooting hormones need to be refrigerated to keep them from degrading. Most of the stuff on the market is junk!

Fulvic acid is a good root stimulator that works well and is affordable. It causes plants to grow and take up nutrients. It is a natural component of humus.

Your method for rooting cuttings is more important than gimmicks you can buy to aid in rooting.
Taking your cuttings for rooting at the right time of year is essential. Taking the right part of the plant. Using a sterile rooting medium. Giving the cuttings a good environment to root in. And, being familiar with the species you are propagating.
All important practices in culture!
