I want to plant Orange Mint at the back of my yard in a wooded area . I hear it is invasive.
If I regularly mow the grass, will it stop the mint from coming into my lawn? I am in Zone 4a, if that makes any difference
Orange Mint - how to control in ground
Nothing stops mint from spreading, not mowing, not blow torches, not surface-to-air missles! If you want to keep it from spreading into your lawn grass and eventually taking over, you need to install a barrier at least 12" deep and 3" above ground level. The mint will try to crawl over the 3" barrier, but you can see it coming and cut it off.
Please consider another ground cover--mint may be more trouble than it is worth to you.
Contain it in containers...
Do NOT plant mint in the ground.
It is truly invasive, withstands any kind of
weather, and will still be spreading 30 years
from now. Containers are the best choice.
Point well taken. I will continue to just grow it in my container on the deck. Thanks
The way I've always found to contain mint is to WANT it to grow. As soon as I make my wishes known within earshot of the plant (do plants have ears?) then it dies right out. To the ground. Below ground. Sometimes it dies all the way back to the nursery, 20 miles away. Dead. Fini. Capoo000oot. Gone.
I've been trying to grow chocolate mint for years and I don't care if it grows all over the neighborhood some day. I just want it in my yard NOW. But, alas, it must have heard me say I wanted it to live because there isn't even a curdled up, dried leaf of it left out there.
:)
LOL. ScotDeerie - you could probably hire yourself
out as a "mint controller" and make a fortune!
You can always put your planter of mint out in the yard where you want it, but make sure that you put something solid under it so it doesn't come in contact with the dirt. If it does, it'll root and take off.

ScotDeerie - I hear you. I could never grow it from seed. But this time I bought a plant and so far, so good. Don't want to jinx it by saying anymore
