New grass problem

Pittsburgh, PA

I planted new grass from seed and let it grow for 2 weeks. Then I went away for a week and came back and it had grown tall and in patches it flopped over and kind of created brown tangled matted areas. I cut it yesterday but the matted areas are still flat and I'm afraid they are going to stay that way.

Will this work itself out or is there something I should do to get all of the grass the same height?

Did you have a lot of rain? It looks very wet to me and got matted down by the mower. Once it dries it should bounce back up so you can cut it again. If not, you may have to lightly rake it.

I agree looks wet, really wet. Did something lay in those areas? What kind of wild life do you have in your area? Strays? Almost looks as though while wet something laid on the grass. I would lightly rake it back up and mow when not so wet. Check blade(s) on mower, may need sharpening.

Thanks for responding. It did rain quite a bit while we were gone. It's dried up some but the patches have since turned brown and brittle. I cut it again and tossed down a little more seed over the brown areas. i hope it works.

Another thought is grubs or another root eating bug. Just to check you can dig around the outter edge of the dead area and see what you find about an inch or two down. Also may have rock or something buried just below surface keeping the roots from growing adequately.
