SUNFLOWER CONTEST..no rules, just post yours!

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

What, I have to shave my legs? Not until July when I'm on vacation in 100 degree weather and am forced to wear shorts or die.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Not even in 100 degree weather do I wear shorts! As for the hair.. well that is only for my nair dresser to know for sure! hehehe!

Ok, the hub is 6.2 eyes of blue...will the mammoths top him? They are nearly his knee high in some portions of the plot! The race is on!

Who else has mammoths? Or even grey stripers going?

This is an old pic...

That head is 18 inches across.. thats the parent of my babies! Yup, where they all began!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

LOL, don't have to shave here, well maybe the chin LOL! But due to the PAD the hair doesn't even grow anymore! I wear shorts all the time btw, I think I got some great Tina Turner legs! They don't work as well as they should but aside from the bruising from the drugs when they aren't banged up they are in quite good condition! So I'll be flashin some flesh when my sunnys start to pop up!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, flashing flesh might be fun for some... but wont that make the CHEAP HOE jealous? LOL!

NOPE, no shorts.. only time I wear shorts is in the house...not outside. No flesh flashing outside here! I need to preserve my Coppertone butt! LOL!

My flesh flashing days are over.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

LOL, not me bb, I was born a flasher I guess.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Here is the true shot!!

I just had to have some fun with that! He got down to pull a weed and there I was with his camera and I got to thinking.. hmmm Jurassic sunflowers! LOL! I was gonna make him lay down so they looked over his head already, but could not quite get him to twist his head just right!

LOL knees or not they are huge and so are yours Dianne. Think I better bow outta the contest while the getting is good. Not sure I see a sign of mine coming up and having a similar problem with the zinnia seeds as well. Planted tons of them and repeated that about 4 times since may and hardly a seedling is comin up. Not sure what the problem is, too much rain? Insects getting them?

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Hail?!! Oh, I just had to get that in. Beleive it or not, quite a few of ours had trouble germinating too so hang in there and plant some more!

We got 1.5 inches of rain again today.... I think that is what is booting ours plus a healthy dose of horsemanure when we planted. They are in pure sand without it otherwise.

You had me fooled!!! lol. good one.

Ok, game on.....

Candee, we can grow a few sunflowers ...no probs!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I am going to get more seed this weekend and then that's it!

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Yay....I get to be in the contest since I got the official word from Terri that those are "my" sunflowers LoL. I have no idea what variety was planted. I think they may be more of the 3 foot high ones that the farms around here normally grow for commercial use - but, they may turn out to be tall, towering ones with huge heads.

Blossom - you had me fooled.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

That was fun! Hey does this count as a sunflwoer???

Its a heliopsis called Summer sun!

SOZ! You didn;t have me fooled this time even with your helpful chap! lol. Very creative.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Just went to plant my sunflower seeds and I seem to either not be able to find them or don't have any! How is this even possible?!?!? So I'm off to the nursery in a few to get me some sunflower seeds and also zinnia seeds which I seem to have spaced on. geez!

Today I got planted:

small herb planter with 2 kinds of parsley, marjoram, and italian oregano
little decorative planter with ivy and pansies
small planter with heuchera (coral bells) and geranium
another small planter, also with heuchera and geranium
corn
artichokes (probably too late for this year but should be good to go for 2010!
pansies as a border in one of the vegie beds

Working at the theater tonight (I take tickets on Tuesdays in return for free movies, popcorn, and pop), then coming home to wash up some dishes I unpacked yesterday from a box from the garage and polish some silver, also from a box from the garage. Have been drinking caffeine all day so I won't be tired when I get home from the movie (that Matthew McConnohay/Jennifer Garner movie). Slowly but surely am getting my act together!

Oh, also scored on a free chicken run today, chatted with a neighbor/friend who hopefully is going to build me a chicken coop, and also talked on the phone with a woman who is hopefully going to build me a chicken tractor. Getting soooo close to the chicken dream! Have a friend who's heading over to eastern Washington/Idaho who might be able to pick up 2 speckled sussex babies if they are ready. I might have chicks in my house by next Wednesday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Gwen, whatza chicken run? LOL!

I scored some herbs today too. Have not been out to the Sunflower patch today, but its raining tonite so I expect them to be waist high or better and thats without the tricky pics!

Did you say zinnias???? Is it too late to plant them>? Hmmm... I must dig my seeds out. I have been too much into petunias this seasopn.. Just got another bargain for a flat at $2 and 10 pots of herbs for 25c each....

Meanwhile back at the sunflower patch.....

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Now pardon my blonde but what the heck is a "chicken tractor"? Sounds like you are really gonna have your hands full here soon on the farm. Perhpas you better check with elle she can tell you it isn't all fun and roses LOL!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I just planted zinnias again for the 4th. time this season thanks to all the rain or something. They just would not come up and I had tons of seed I had harvested last season.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

A chicken tracter is a portable chicken run that lets the chickens graze confined and you can roll it around the farm. I still wanna know what a chicken runs....

Well, I am off to look for those Zinnias, Guess we cant be too late... spring was late so what the heck, I may as well try!

Hustling off to the GPS4

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Ok, I am back From the GPS4, pant pant....and on the way... well....no cheating, the real thingee.. 6.2 Eyes of Blue in the sunflowerpatch and yup, standing legal.

So my number is #20? Is that a for sure?

Thumbnail by BLOSSOMBUDDY
Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

A chicken tractor is a small portable chicken coop (often triangular shaped or rectangular) that you either pick up and carry with handles or has wheels like a wheelbarrow that you move around so the chickens can graze in different areas. Some people do it so the same area doesn't get so dug up; I'm doing it so my chickens will weed my garden for me!

Don't know if it's too late to plant zinnia seeds. I bought some yesterday and in they go today. I just planted corn yesterday and still haven't done beans or peas yet. Is it too late? I guess we'll find out. If nothing else, they'll grow, just may not flower.

If your zinnia seeds didn't come up and you're sure they're not 'old' seed, then my guess is the birds ate them. The birds will eat every seed I plant unless I cover the seeds til they are well sprouted. I start a lot of my stuff inside a greenhouse during the winter but some things are best started in the ground. I cover those eithe with a row cover or with other little devices. Those green plastic strawberry containers turned upside down and pinned down over the seeds work well.

I've heard on the grapevine terriculture's Sunflowers are very impressive. LoL!

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Just in from planting 5 kinds of sunflowers and covering the seeds with row cover. Whew! Why is everything more work than anticipated?

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Your making it too hard!
