trees not doing their tree thing

Swansea, MA(Zone 6a)

I have two trees, one is a really pretty weeping tree that produces pretty pink flowers, the other I'm not sure what it is, both have been doing very well for at least five years, probably more like 10-15 years, but this year no foliage whatsoever.....any ideas?

Have you checked the tips of branches for flexability(sp)? The branches back toward the trunck sould have a nice green layer just under the bark. Most trees you can scrape gently with a pocket knife(or other similar tool) and find this life showing layer easily. Have you had late frosts/freezes that may have stunted these trees this season? You can also look at the trunck at ground level. There may be borer holes. How much soil, mulch, etc. is piled around base of trees?

Honestly I don't know much about them. My parents planted them a long time ago. I'd assumed they were past the point of necessary intervention frankly. They've bloomed every year, and they're pretty good size trees, so the soil around the base is flush with the ground. The branches appear to be flexible but I have not checked for green under the bark. I didn't see any border holes, but I'll check for those things this afternoon. In my opinion we actually had a very mild spring. All my other trees bloomed, even the ones that didn't seem as hardy. Could bugs have attacked just the foliage? If I spray them will they come back next year?

Some of the ornamental trees have short life spans 15 - 20 years. They may have reached the end. Had to chop down my 15 year old Yoshino cherry this year, but my Kwanzan is still hanging in there.
