Summer... share your pic's

That garden is gorgeous, gemini_sage. What is that magenta bloom on the delicate grey-green stalks? Some kind of dianthus? I never imagined hot pink would look so good next to orange, which is why I love this thread. It gives me inspiration to be brave.

I suspect my gardens won't be discovered for another year or so. We get some wildlife, but not as much as I'd like and no butterflies to speak of. It is still early in the season, and I planted last fall and this spring with plants to attract insects and birds, so maybe I will be pleasantly surprised if we ever get any sun.

Thanks peony! Those are Rose Campion with the bright magenta blooms (seeds from critterologist :-)). In most of my gardens I'm kinda OCD about color, but anything goes in the the butterfly garden, and I've discovered so many combinations I'd never have thought to try. I toss various seeds in there and no id plants. I haven't been sure if my tastes are changing as I plunge forth into middle age, but I'm starting to love combinations I once would have thought clashy, LOL. I'm loving hot pink with orange these days!

Beautiful pictures you all. Now I know what I am going to call my mismatched garden beds. " This is my butterfly garden" I'll say.

I have GOT to do the seed trade thing, and soon! It's not too late to direct sow, is it?

So you just toss a mixed handful in to the air? That would produce a lovely, wildflower effect.

Alamogordo, NM(Zone 7b)

Lovely photos all! I adore dragonflies and we only have rust or turq. colored ones. You do need a fast shutter normally to capture one. Although I got a great shot once when we had had rain and I guess he was drying off. http://www.flickr.com/photos/quiltdiva/2961188871/

I love the popups and my entire front courtyard is "planned" for it to happen. I love not knowing exactly what will come up where. This is the third yard I have done that way. People ask me to plan theirs and they don't like that I tell them I let Mother Nature happen!

cactus.. That is a beautiful shot of the DF!

Thanks Beahive. Do you have a flickr account? They are free and with your lovely photos it would be fun to have you as a contact there.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

cactus..I do not have those online accounts as I use some of my photos for my little business. Is there a way to protect them from being downloaded or copyright them as they post?

The yellow flower version of Jacobs Ladder. First bloom for me on this plant. It is very nice.

peony, there are some things you could still direct sow, like Cosmos, Zinnias, Marigolds, and some Sunflowers (shorter varieties of all those will bloom faster too). You may want to consider participating in the Piggy seed swap this fall- its lots of fun, and if you know ahead of time, you can be saving some seeds in preparation. I sowed about 250 different kinds of seed this spring, and didn't buy any of them :-)

Piggy seed swap, lol. I am egregiously behind on submitting my seed wish list, but I *finally* got a bubble mail envelope yesterday, so this weekend I should start thinking about it.

I have no idea how to collect seeds. I assume I break open pods? For geraniums, I think the seeds fall onto the leaves.

I should probably be asking my questions in another thread, but this one is like catnip to me. ;-)

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

peony8,Thats so funny,I too need to think about the seed swap.I just ran across a bunch of seed I collected last yr,but I went out and sowed all of it,not even thinking.OH well there no doubt be 1000s more to collect soon.

Yes Beahive you can set the privacy on many levels. I don't have mine where people can download the full version. They can right click and copy but that is just a small image they can't do much with.

Lovely photos Angie.

thank you cactuspatch =)

My cat Indy enjoying the cool breeze yesterday at noon as we sat in the front garden. The plant in front of her is a lantana. It stays smaller than the other lantanas I have and makes a groundcover under the ash tree. I don't know if you can see, but the blooms are white--however this one has put out several purple ones this year.

cactus..thanks for the info on Flicker. When time permits maybe I will get a slide show put together. Your kitty is so pretty and looks very content laying in your garden.

The delphinum are just scrumptious this year.

I don't have a problem with deer, but the squirrels love to dig anything up that's freshly planted. They have a sixth sense about any soil that has been disturbed. They'll find it and dig in it. I had to put crates over my hostas when they were coming up this year to keep them from eating them.

Here's my monarda dwarf, Grand Marshall, in full bloom. Very different shape from my Jacob Cline. I wonder if it will come back next year this compact?
