The bottom leaves of my tomato plant are turning yellow. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Tomatoe leaves turning yellow
I've experienced this on some of my leaves that are on the bottom of my tomatoes. Especially if they touch the ground.
A couple dying off seem to be normal especially on plants that are really bushy and sunlight isn't reaching the bottom leaves. If the entire plant is yellowing then it is a sign of over-watering.
As long as you've got a thick layer of mulch such as pine straw, shredded leaves, or untreated pine bark, and you are watering the soil (such as with a soaker hose) rather than wetting the plants/leaves, then I would say it's just normal leaf dieback. I usually clean up the bottoms of my plants so there is little or no foliage 1 foot from the ground.
I remove the lowest leaves - up to but not including the first leaves that set blossoms. This helps keep fungus spores from splashing up onto the leaves, discourages pests from climbing, and lets the air circulate better.
I also put a heavy mulch around each plant.
