Hi,
I have 2 phalaenopsis orchid's, one is starting to bud again. I'm sure I read somewhere that it will need to be misted regularly, is this true and is there any other special treatment a phalaenopsis orchid that is growing new buds needs?
Thanks :)
Orchids
Misting does NOTHING to raise humidity for a plant. You would have to mist it every 5-10 minutes 24/7. Get a humidifier. Once it starts to bud try not to move the plants location.
I don't have space for a humidifier.
Dipsy: Phal's like a lot of water so I think if you just water regularly and don't let the potting medium dry out, they should do fine. We have a lot of humidity here where I live so I don't have to mist at all. Right now, the few orchids I grow are out on my deck by the swimming pool where it stays humid all year round. I usually move them outside and hang them in the shade of a tree for the summer and I water with the garden hose two to three times a week during the hot summer months. Orchids also like a lot of fresh air so it's very important to have good air movement, but no chilly drafts.
Here's some good cultural information I found about growing the lovely "Moth Orchids": http://www.ctu.edu.vn/~dvxe/Hoa%20Lan/Doc%20on%20web/growing%20Phalaenopsis.htm
Thanks; they are in bark and I check then regularly and water them just when there is a little bit of moisture left, usually just the bottom bark is slightly damp (but not wet).
I'll have a look at the site, thank you :)
I keep my orchids in a large tray with about 2 or 3 inches of pea gravel in it. Then I fill the tray with water just to below the top layer of gravel. As the water evaporates it provides the plant with the humidity it likes. This way when the plant needs to be watered you can put extra water in the tray so the plant can absorb it through the bottom of the pot.
