Hi,
I recently noticed my tomato plan dying and after a closer look I found some sort of growth on the stem.
Can someone please tell me what this is and what I can do to fix the problem?
Thanks.
Tomato stem fungus?
Im no expert but it looks like mine, looks like the stem is sending out new roots.Hopefully some of the more experienced gardeners will verify this :)
That definitely looks like new roots trying to grow. Something must have happened to the root system beneath the ground. If possible plant it deeper or mound the dirt around it.
plavey - you say your tomato plant is dying? From your photo, it looks as though your tomatoes are growing new roots along the stems - were these stems lying on the ground? I would suggest you cut away any dead or dying sections of the plant, and let those roots establish themselves in the ground - the plant should send up new shoots somewhere along the buried stems.
My tomatoes & tomatillos look like that, too! I guess I need to mound dirt up around mine, too. Thanks for asking the question.
you may want to examine the base of the plant for any damage. Cut worms, grubs, etc. can damage the main stem and then the plant begins to make new roots above the damaged area.
I had one plant that a single cutworm ate through 80% of the stem in a single day. When I uprooted the plant I found it in the ground beneath the root system and well, it is no longer with us, but I moved the plant to another area and buried it twice as deep and it's now flowering. I now have another plant that looks like it's being eaten at the base. Can't move this one at this time, so I treated the ground around it with Sevin.
