I think that I just did something really kind of dumb, and I would like to figure this out. I bought 2 packages of strawberry roots - 2 different kinds, each package said it held 10 roots. (I've only been gardening about 4 years now and I've always planted from seed.) So, I dug 2 holes and opened up the package; inside was what I assumed were the roots, all completely covered in dirt. So, I put the whole thing in the hole, covered it, and watered it. I did the same thing with the second package, but I decided to water it before I covered it, to see if I could make out any details. As I poured water on it in the hole I had dug, I noticed that there was a rubber band around the roots. I took off the rubber band, spread everything out just a little bit, and covered the hole. Was I supposed to separate the roots out, and plant them in separate holes? Could somebody please give me basic instructions on how to plant roots? And, if I did do it wrong, would it hurt if I dug the roots up and re-planted them the correct way? I would really appreciate any help I could get!
Planting roots
Go ahead and dig them up, separate them, and replant them in their own place. Actually, it'd be easier if you hoed a shallow trench and just set them in about a foot apart, then cover them with topsoil. You might want to put some fertilizer or good compost in the trench first, mix it up a little with the soil, then place the root (spread out the roots), and cover with soil. Don't bury then deep... the crown should be at ground level so that it can sprout. They probably have some leaves on them already, maybe old dried up ones and possibly some new ones showing. Don't worry, they will be fine.
