Just bought our first house and have a huge yard to garden--but I am a little iffy about planting some plants in certain spots.
The area I would like to work on for the next couple of weeks gets full sun up until about Noon or 1pm. After that it's full shade for the rest of the day.
It is an 11 foot stretch along a full fence. I wanted to plant Hollyhocks along the back, Lupine and Foxglove in front of those and then flank each side with hydrangeas. Will there be enough sun for these plants? If not, are there any suggestions for a similar layout with plants more suited for the amount of sun/shade?
Thanks!
Will these plants work in partial shade?
The hydrangea will do fine in morning sun afternoon shade. I think they bloom better with some sun. I don't know about the other plants. Hope this helps.
I know that the foxglove typically says full sun as the requirement, but I have seen them in shadier spots. I would check with a local nursery. The other approach is to plant and see how they do -- assuming you take care of them, worst case they won't flower as much and you could move them.
My wife has foxgloves in a bed that only gets morning sun and they are doing just fine. Of course she made a liar out of me by planting a climbing rose that gets less sun that that and it is going crazy with growth and blooms!

The foxglove I planted last year gets afternoon sun from 1-4. It seems to be doing fine, just about to bloom.
Awesome, thanks for all the answers! :)
The foxglove will do fine with afternoon shade. I'm fairly certain all of the stuff you've listed will do well with that much sun.
