Weed Killers.

Weed Killers. Has anyone on this forum heard off using Vineagar as a weed killer and if you have how do you mix it. Do you mix it with water and how. Has anyone heard of using Rock Salt to kill weeds and how do you mix it. Thankyou.

There is a strong vinegar that can be purchased at stores that sell organic gardening products. The household vinegar is not strong enough. Be careful - it will damage all plants that get sprayed - it is acidic. You may have to repeat several times, as it may not get to the root, and the weed can just resprout.
Rock salt will kill other plants too. You don't want to start using salt in your garden...

Will it kill WireGrass or Bermuda Grass also will rock salt kill Bermuda Grass or WireGrass.

I don't know, but Round Up will...

Will Vinegar kill ants I saw a add on tv they was selling a book that told all organic ways to kill or repel pest. Also they said Cucumber Slices will get rid of ants or repel them also they said you could get fleas of your dog with a lint roller and they said you could make your own flea color. I think they said use lemon to make it.

Thankyou for your help.

I don't know about wire grass, but I doubt vinegar would kill Bermuda grass. Besides Roundup, there are weed killers made especially for grass that do work on Bermuda (Green Light Grass Out and Ortho Grass B Gone are two that I know of). They don't work instantly--it usually takes a week or two before you'll start to notice the grass dying, but they do work. Unfortunately if you (or your neighbor) has a lawn full of Bermuda it'll keep coming back. If the grass is mixed in with a bunch of desirable plants these are nice because they only kill grasses, vs Roundup will kill everything. But if you don't have desirable plants in the area, Roundup will probably work faster.

I agree with ceejaytown on the rock salt--you definitely do not want to add salt to your garden. There are much more effective weed killers out there that will have much less of a detrimental effect on the rest of your garden.

If you want a safer way to get rid of ants, Boric acid is a relatively nontoxic ingredient that is used in some ant baits such as Terro so I would try that.

Thankyou.
I saw this on the internet it says you can make your own flea collar out of these ingredients. The website said you can add Garlic to you dogs diet to repel fleas. Where do you get Cedarwood and is it expense and what are Garlic capsules.

1/2 Tsp Alcohol

1 drop Cedarwood

1 drop Lavender

1 drop Citronella

1 drop Thyme

4 Garlic Capsules

But you don't want to use boric acid where animals (or kids) can get to it.

There are lots of claims made about various products, but I have not heard of the ones you cite. Fleas burrow down in hair and it is hard to find them unless you can part the hair, so I don't see how the lint roller would work. You might get a couple that happen to be sitting at the surface. If your dog has short hair, a flea comb is a good tool. Ask your vet about products for dogs. Some ordinary everyday items that we use are poisonous to them.

When you use Round Up, you have to be careful not to get it or any of its spray on other plants, because it will kill anything it touches. So if your grass is in a flower bed, or among other desirable grass, you would not want to use a sprayer.

So Cucumber Slices will not repel or kill ants. The Bermuda Grass is in my vegetable garden. Before I added new soil this year I put down a layer of wet leaves about 3 inches deep and the soil I put on top was about 1 inch deep I expect the deep leaves and soil to smother and keep light out so it and other weeds could not come up but they still did. I have had this Bermuda Grass problem about 3 years. When I put the new soil and leaves I scalped the weeds all the way down to the ground with the weedeater I figured that would stop them also I have cut the dandolions in this bed to the ground 3 times but they seam to be able to sprout back fast. Thankyou. Also ecrane3 WireGrass is what my neighbor calls Bermuda Grass in case you want to know. He calls it that because it grows and spreads like wire and looks like wire.

Vinegar, a home remedy, kills top growth on a lot of plants but leaves the roots intact. The plant grows back quickly.
People make a lot of money selling books with advice such as putting cucumber slices in the garden to deter whatever.
Salt or gasoline or motor oil contaminate the soil.
Roundup does NOT. It becomes inert once it touches the ground.

Thankyou.

Atrazine, which is in a lot of preamergent weed killers, kills bermudia grass during it's growing season. It will not harm it when it is dormant. It is a temperture thing with the chemical ,which means it can kill other plants at a higer temp but not others. Bermudia is one of these plants. Hoped I could be of some help.

OOPES. i for got to say if your temps get up to 85 or so Atrazine will kill a bunch of stuff. Carefully read the directions of course and it comes in liquid form.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Atrazine can weaken and eventually kill shrubs and trees in the area where it is used. We do not recommend it here for that reason. I didn't see bermuda listed on the label.
http://www.southernag.com/PDF%20Files/atraz.pdf
Quoted:
"Do not use on muck or alkaline sails. Do not use over rooting area of
trees, ornamentals, vegetables or other desirable plants other than
the indicated turfgrasses.
Do not apply to areas where the natural
drainage would carry the atrazine to adjacent desirable plants. Do not
replant treated areas within 12 months after treatment or injury may
result. Do not overseed turf areas within 6 months after treatment."

Jaywhacker - That was an excellent group of articles - informative and well written. Do you have the home page? I would like to read more from him.

Doggone it, ceejay, I have somehow deleted the home page of the guy that wrote that. I hate it when that happens..........but I did remember he was called the renegade gardner and googled him up again.

He writes some good stuff and does it with a sense of humor.
