May Flowers 4

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

What beautiful flowers everyone has... Great growing... I have a question for all of you... I am not that experienced in growing streps from leaves in soil.. I have these that I have growing and wanted to know when do I take the cover off of them and also when do I separate them? Thanks for any help...
Hugs,
Susan

Susan, those are impressive!!! If it were me, I would leave some press n seal loosely on the top.......or saran loosely on the top. Let them grow until they are much bigger, but they are fabulous looking..............better than mine!

Let me see if I can find a picture of how big I let mine get.........before I separate and when I do separate I keep them domed with the vent open on the top for at least several weeks if not longer.......

Maybe someone else will chime in as there are so many ways............

I can't find a picture but here are some I just potted up.........look at the two big ones in the 2 1/4" pots......I forgot about them......they really can't get too big with their mother leaf.........if you have the space......I wished I had waited longer on some of these.

****edited to say that the brown stuff is Seaweed kelp........hope I didn't kill them.........it was pretty strong!! Just did it today and also used it in all my containers with strep leaves and av leaves, but yours look mighty healthy..................

Turtle,
Your babies look great!! By the time mine make babies in a community tray, the top of the mix is green and some of the leaves are half rotten. Those that Jim sent me,I planted in individual cups, under a dome and I don't seem to get the algae problem. It really doesn't matter, because it doesn't hurt the plants. It just looks ugly and when you open the dome it smells very earthy or fetid ( I don't know how to describe it).
I know Jim has lots of great advice on this topic!
Gail,
Yours look great also. What the heck is press and seal??

Thanks, I thought that I should leave them in longer but wanted to make sure. I do have saran wrap on them but took it off to take pictures.... If you look in the first picture in the far left corner there is a dead leaf but it has babies coming up... I never take a leaf out even if dead as I have had babies come up even when they look dead... I even do this with my water rooted ones after I plant in soil...
I am happy to say my best ebay seller is back selling...LOL I am hoping she has Victorian Lace for me..LOL I want her so bad..
Tomorrow I have some leaves to pot up with roots in water. It takes less time to me to start them that way then in soil.. The trick with soil is not to look at them or to water them....LOL Will keep you all posted... I took some pictures today and will try to post them tomorrow...
Thanks again for the help.

Susan those leaves look awesome!! I am still in the some do some don't phase of rooting strep leaves;) it is a relative thing-- the more i want the particular strep-- the more likely it is to die. Lynn, I did mist everything in the winter because we heat with wood-- haven't for a while though. I lost a couple episcias that probably should have been in domes-- but-- next time LOL

This is supposed to be Happy Snappy, but there is a lot of streaking or netting on the petals. What do you think?

Here is Happy Snappy, but you may have a better one!!! I always love seeing Green Dragon.

Whatever you have is a real find!!!

Interesting--Perhaps you have created Lynn's Happier Snappy! LOL

Snicker ^_^!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Seriously, Lynn, keep that Happy Snappy going! Very unusual...maybe you have a unique sport. Please update on subsequent blooms.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks GL,I will. She has 4 buds, so I can take another picture when they open.

I took a quick shot under the lights with no backdrop.

Very nice, Lynn!!

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Even with that exposure it doesn't look like Happy Snappy,do you think??

Lynn

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

No,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it looks better than Happy Snappy........so hold on and keep us posted!!!

Williston, ND

You all will never believe who called me this morning! It was RainGazer...........she said she wanted to come back and start growing more plants again. Her subscription had run out but she was going to renew it soon.

Great!! And beautiful picture Gail!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lynn, you take good care of that streptocarpus so you can give it a name after you grow it out for 3 generations............you deserve it.............

I just played again and found some Gerber Daisies from this winter........I even found those little fall leaves........(only from my corel program).

What Gail said is right, Lynn. Keep every leaf you can and grow them out for more blooming plants. As with all fantasies, there are always those who do not bloom with the fantasy. True in violets and true in streps. That being said, propagate it and if the majority bloom with the fantasy, then I certainly would register it with the AGGS and name it.

The first bloom from Rob's Humpty Doo since I acquired it 3 months ago!

on violets you need to grow a sport out 3 generations, not the case with gessies
but it would be a good idea to see if it propagates from a leaf and to make sure its a sport and not one that got mixed names

JIM

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

why wouldn't you need to grow it out several times with several leaves to make sure you have the fantasy one?????? If it has a name, then she can find out.................but I have never seen a nancy Block that looks like this one............we can all study.........

Why wouldn't it propagate from a leaf??????? I have had some strange streps but they all grow true if I have used the right leaves............

Williston, ND

ive got a freind that had peachy pink sport to a fantasy but it never produced true from a leaf, soooooo he has a plant that has fantasy
but its not able to be reproduced,,

JIM

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have all kinds of Iced Pink Flamingo...........all the same bloom but different kinds of foliage...........some all green..........some all variegated...............

I hope for Lynn's sake that she tries every leaf she can without killing the plant.............this would be so much fun..............if she is successful.............

On my Different Drummer (variegated with dilute blooms) from Nancy Black, I have a giant seed pod and can hardly wait to plant the seeds.............

Williston, ND

i cant wait to see what you get gail

JIM

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Darn!! With Jim's help,I think my Strep. is simply mislabled. It seems to be Ako Happy Sport,a Japanese variety. That's okay LOL..I like it more than Happy Snappy anyhow.

Lynn
Sorry,Ako Happy Splash ^_^

Tinkerbell ia a cutie--Can't wait to see the bloom! Humpty doo is very pretty Nicole.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Lynn, did you grow that one from a leaf? It's so nice.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Don't be too sure, Lynn........when I grow Happy Snappy, sometimes she has some faded out different blooms............Someone show us a picture of the Japanese one, please.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I saw the picture of Ako Happy Splash and I can't tell................don't give up..........

Williston, ND

its either a sport or ako happy splash,(maybe ako happy splash is a sport of happy snappy

It originally came from Susan as a baby plant, back in about February. As far as she knows, she never had ako happy splash. So I will just wait and see.
