Yes, Nancy! It was so nice to get down and dirty with no competing agenda today except to work in the gardens. It is so beautiful here right now - so green and lush and everywhere I look there are birds feeding their babies (we have 2 phoebe nests, a chickadee, a tree swallow, a turkey with 12 - 14 babies and lots of other birds, including hummers at war, a yellow grosbeak or two and on and on. It makes your heart just sing!
I see lots of fat stalks on several iris's, so the show is about to begin, along with some of the peonies. Yippee! Happy Memorial Day weekend!!
Yay...blooms everywhere... even roses....
oh Louise! I just love that bleeding heart... such a big plant... I have a tiny one that I planted from seed last year... really cute... I love them... I have to plant more seeds this year... really cool.
Here is the iris I got yesterday - rocking roll.... so pretty...
Deb, its always fun to be with you my dear friend... oh I really value your friendship... I think we need to go back and get another rocking roll... one more would really be great! I am off Tue and Wed...
Wow - everything looks great, Kass! And looks like you had fun with Deb. Veggie garden looks fantastic. My raised beds a re real high too - 30". Good luck and enjoy the bounty!
Kassia,
your garden looks great, you're so much ahead of me here in Maine.I have 3 of my tree peonies in bloom, some forgetmenots and iris and lilac.oh yeah LOTS of dandelions too.
But no roses for several more weeks I suppose. We had a brutal winter here with lots of snow, ice and wind.Lost all of my 5 tree roses and had to cut several of my roses down to the ground.the most disappointing was 'Laguna' which was 7 ft high last year covered with lots of roses.
So I am especially glad to hear that yours are doing good :-)
Thanks Victor.... I am still looking for a japanese maple... I want one to plant in a pot to be a bonsai...
I am hoping for a good crop! nothing like our own veggies!
Bridgite!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I miss you woman!!!!!!!!! how are you???? oh its so good to hear from you!!!!!!!!!!
Yup - I think we have to go back and get the rest of those Iris Kassia. They have our names on them! I love your Chihuly. Your garden makes orange and purple go together so well. Would you believe that Therese Bugnet is all blooming? A lot of the blossoms are falling already. I gave the sleepover kids each a bouquet of roses to take home to their moms.
Eglantyne, my tree peonies are done - the yellow one just finished up today. I hope the herbaceous peonies last a little longer. Our garden's here are so advanced for what they usually are. We should have a lot of roses blooming in a very short time - usually the peonies are first, then iris and then roses. This year they are all going to go at once, I think.
As for veggies - I woke up late this morning and what did I find!? EVERY cucumber seed sprouting - Yikes! I have to go thin them out now!
Have a great night all!
Deb
Brigitte, I lost all my tree roses also... and they were in the garage! lost a tuscan sun, 3 Lavender Simplicity, Cherry Parfait, Bill Warriner, 2 Disneyland roses, the beautiful Westerland that coverd the arch had to be cut to the ground also... so the arch is bare! so my dear friend I totally hear your disapointment... Rugosas are really the best... they are the first ones to bloom for me!
this year I see how much I have to pile some more dirt around some of my roses because the bud is really showing ... I need to add compost and mulch a lot this year in the fall.
my only comfort is that the clematis are really putting out a show this year... so one of the arches is really pretty...
Deb, lest go Tue.... I hope they are still there! waiting for us... lol!
You guys are so funny....it's never "enough", once you see what's there it's SO hard to resist! My peonies will probably bloom this week I think, they look like they're ready to burst. One white rugosa rose bloomed yesterday, so here we go! I'm supposed to be collecting rose petals to dry for my daughter's wedding, so I have to pay attention and grab them before they go over the hill.
Beautiful blooms, Kassia! I'm so sorry you and Eglantyne lost so many tree roses. Imagine having to cut a 7' rose all the way back to the ground!! I hope it comes right back up for you,
Eglantyne!
pretty
Kassia, so nice you have so much going on! I do, too, and have so much work to do. I hate it when I have to take time to do anything other than working in the gardens or relaxing. I love your Rockin Roll Iris. So pretty! I've very partial to iris. How are the DL's you got from me last fall doing? I hope well. Oh, that Chihuly rose is spectacular, too, and I'm not a rose person.
You know, Kass, my lupines don't seem to last, either. They look wonderful while they are in bloom, but they only seem to last a couple of years, maybe 3 at most, and then they're done. They do seed in, though, and grew a bunch from seed this year, too, so I'm hoping next year they'll look spectacular.
Brigitte and Kass, so sad to hear about the loss of so many roses. That's a real tragedy!
Karen
Your Rose trip looks wonderful.
I wish DD would buy more. She is in charge of those types of plants.
Brought back a climber from pititful state when w moved in.
Had 1 flower in 2007 and last year it looked like this.
DANG I cant find it. I painted it too. I'll post the painting
Neighbor cat Cheuie walked in front of the camera when I was taking the picture, just had to paint him too.
Very pretty, Kassia! Is Abraham Darby a climber? I think that's the cultivar of my high-growing "hoop rose" (I've formed a hoop with it). I just might have it misnamed. Thanks, Kass!
Karen, you know how I feel! could not describe it better... I have to work Thu and Fri 7am -730pm - which means I only see the garden early in the morning and very late at night... oh I hate that... but sat & sun I work 3-11 so it's way better because I garden and then I go to work... much better that way!
Good to know about the lupines... I don't feel so bad anymore... Karen the daylilies are all growing... can't wait for them to bloom... I know they will bloom! didn't loose any so far!
ah I love irises... no question about it... they just hooked me!
ge- oh have your DD see pic on the rose forum.... that should do! or drop me an dmail... I will be more than happpppppy to explain why one should have more roses!!!! you are an artist...! love your painting!
Louise, Abraham Darby is a David Austin rose. Mine is not a climber - it has big and fat roses... smells wonderful and the bush actually grows 5ft tall... last year mine had 2 long canes, but this year all the canes are about the same height and it has a nice shape. I have one rose Isabel Renaissance that is supposed to be 4 ft tall, but I have one cane that is at least 8 ft tall and I had to make a loop so it would not break. So I don't doubt that yours could be AD... this is a pic from last year.
Thanks, Kass! When it blooms I'll post a shot to see what you think. It could have been mis-tagged. But maybe not if you have some tall canes too.
Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous Kassia!! Happy Day! I have climbing roses all over the place, but they're mostly old residents that have been brought from the edge, which of course I'm happy about, but I I have no idea what they are. I have a great Purple Tiger rose that I got last year that isn't looking too spunky, I think it needs better soil. Our garden club is having our annual dinner at Elizabeth Park on the 17th...I CAN HARDLY WAIT!! I haven't been there in many years.
Kassia, I'm thrilled the DL's are doing so wonderfully for you! You will love them. They will look best their third year.
I, too, work long hours on Thu and Fri. Not quite as long as you, though. I work 9-7:30 both days. On Tues and Wed I work 9-5. I have the weekends off, and on the second and third Mon of each month (excluding Nov and Dec) I work 9-noon with the other Mondays off. Then I do an overnight shift on Sundays from 8 pm-8 am. I love it when I have the 2 long weekends each month. In June I took a couple of Mondays off, so I will have 4 long weekends.
Jo Anne, you painting is wonderful!
Karen
Thanks Karen
I just cant believe I deleted the original photo.
I'll just wait for a couple of weeks and pix again, the bush is loaded with blooms.
NOID as to the name.
Looking forward to seeing the pic of that rose, Jo Anne.
Karen
oooh, Nancy - Elizabeth Park during rose season late June is just about the prettiest place one can imagine. I worked fairly close to it, so I'd often take my lunch and sit among the roses for a few minutes when I could get away. Enjoy!!
OK, heee, I'll spill...my name is Susan, not Nancy. Not sure where Nance came from, you're not the first to use that!
HEY I did get some of Celeste's iris! They just started blooming today, what a great surprise! I have to go out and label them properly now.
AH! My wonderful friend Kassia.
Good to hear and see your doing well. I think about you every time I go by your street.
Marilyn and I just got back from Disney world last week. It is amazing to see the toperairy (sp) they have.
From Mickey Mouse to Beauty and the Beast all in the shape of bushes. The flowers and garden are breath taking to a home gardener.
I kept thinking how great it would be to be part of it until I saw how much work it entailed to keep it up.
My gardens are also doing very well this year. That's the good news. The bad news is I don't have any room left for new plants.
Hope you have a blooming summer!
Chuck
Oh, a Disney trip!! Pics????
OMG, Susan.......I'm sorry about that.....I've called you Nancy for a year now. LOL Susan, Susan, Susan..........I'll get it! LOL
You can call me Nancy, Louise. Or is it Barbara?
Victoria?? No, maybe Barbara is better!
Barbie!! Ken?
Hi Louise
Is the summer place all remodled?
Jo Ann
Very nice! Everything looks so beautiful and lush.
more roses opening!!!!! Hi everyone... you guys are the best... I am so very blessed to for all your support and encouragement... my garden reflects that... the joy of being able to plant something and seeing it grown...
I did a double last night and when I arrived home this morning I could not sleep. All I could do was to change and get dirty... planted new containers and kept going and going... so strange this year... roses opening before the peonies... peonies opening on both my neighbors - right and left.... but mine still not opened! the clematis are gorgeous this year... oh so wonderful...now I belive they come back! and I did not prune this year... too complicated... so I am taking nature's way... let it alone!!!! lol....
