Roses are finally poppin' here in Rhinebeck. The cool weather has only seemed to fatten the buds. Today, finally, some of mine are blooming. Here is my first Geoff Hamilton of the season

And here's Winchester Cathedral, wearing that pink blush that comes out whenever it's cold. It's a sport of Mary Rose, and when chilly, begins to resemble MOM

And here is the garden, as seen from the side door. See that pee gee at the middle. It used to be even. But the ice storm of Jan took out the right side of it. I think if I trim the left, it will all come back evenly ... but a little scared

and finally, here's what I've cooked up for the urn. A combo of some moss that seems to have found it naturally, paired with these cute little blue sedums I couldn't resist.

Wow Daisy how pretty!!!

Gorgeous, Daisy!!

Kassia, love your clems! You don't actually have to have trellises for them. Let some climb on your rose bushes! I have some growing on a barberry bush, and they look great. Here is a natural trellis I just put up for a clem I have in the back that didn't have any support, and no shrubs nearby. No blooms yet, but I do have buds. It's a deep purple called Warsaw Nike.

Daisy, I love your urn with the moss and sedums!

great yard Daisy.... and I too love the urn

Thanks, everyone! Here are a few pretties from this morning ... ones that just popped. Here is the utter queen of my roses ... tho it's not in the formal rose garden, above. It's La Belle Sultane, a spring blooming Gallica named for a cousin of Empress Josephine who was captured by pirates and sold into the harem of a famous sultan. While she served the sultan, her cousin named a rose after her at La Malmaison.

Sigh

Here are the only 2 blooms on the huge La Belle Sultane to to pop this morning. This is why I garden, for this moment. Silly me.

And here is my recalcitrant Abraham Darby. This plant has given me fits for years. Finally, a decent blush of blossoms this year. Here's the first one. And even it is nowhere near perfect. Grrrrrrrr ... but improved.

Here's one that I bought from White Flower Farm at least 15 years ago, maybe much longer. It's a NOID. It has gorgeous bluish leaves, this huge open single bloom, zonky coloring and huge thorns. When happy, it gets to about 6' high. Any ideas? Spring flowering, no repeating. Think its some kind of rugosa?

Daisy, that Abraham Darby bloom looks fantastic with the viola blossoms. Very striking together.

Beeeeautiful pictures. I really need to get outside and take some. Ick, my favorite iris, Magical Glow, is all soggy with iris borers. *Crack*, that's the sound of my heart breaking. I've soaked the rhizomes in the bleach solution, now I guess I have to replant and wait a couple years. Rats.

Kassia - nice clems and roses and nails! LOL

Daisy - beautiful roses and garden!! I also love that urn and those adorable sedum. Does your urn have drainage? I'm wondering how the sedum do in a heavy rain? Very lovely!

JoAnn - we're making progress, but we have a long way to go. We've been here a month and we were just saying today during our break that it is amazing that we are just now starting to feel we've made some progress. We had a worker here today helping us out. Goodness! There is just so much follow-up stuff when you rebuild 3 sides of the house. We're taking our time and we've had lots of other stuff going on too, so things are fine!

Rhinebeck, NY(Zone 5b)

Thanks Nuts for Daylily. That purple viola is a happy accident. Wish I thought of it myself, but no, the viola seeded itself in.

Donnie Brook: thanks for the nice comments about the roses and garden.

Yes, the urn has plenty of drainage, and so far the sedum seems to be doing well, even in the rain. The variety of sedum has the most wonderful name: angelicum "Love's Triangle." Isn't that great?

Because of the way the heat beats down on that side of the house, reflecting off of the white house and often fries that urn, I'm more worried about the moss than the sedum. But then again, the moss "found" the urn all by itself, and so far, so good.

I think moss is the most under-rated plant. I love it.

Looking great, Daisy!

Kassia, what beautiful pictures on your blog! I love the succulent garden. My 2 favorite roses of yours are Betty Boop and George Burns. Magnificent!

Daisy, I agree with you about moss. I just love moss, and more and more I have been trying to encourage it to grow wherever it occurs naturally. I have some in sun and a lot more in shade. My sister put in a bunch around a birdbath, which is in full sun, and it has done very well, but that area stay moist, and I'm assuming the soil is acidic, as that is what moss likes. I even have Jack-in-the-Pulpits growing there. They are volunteers.
