Primrose Forum Needed

Pittsford, NY(Zone 5b)

Would everyone interested in a Primrose Forum please email Dave with the request? I just emailed him about it and he is willing to set one up if there is enough interest out there for a separate Primrose forum. Please email him if you are interested. Thanks!

Whoa.....let's don't email Dave with your requests ;o)

As we explained to Peony_Anne, historically, most new forums began as a "grass roots" effort when a member posts the suggestion in this forum and others join in.

As administrators, we watch such threads pretty closely to see how much interest is generated by the topic. After several days (or even a few weeks) of monitoring the thread, we can get a "feel" for the level of sustained interest, take the suggestion under advisement and make a decision. Those of you who are interested may want to look for existing primrose threads and see if there's been much activity on this topic in the past. (The past is certainly not a guarantee of the future, but it can be a fairly decent indicator ;o)

One other thing to consider is whether it's a forum that is needed, or if information can be shared by contributing photos, details and comments to the primroses within PlantFiles: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher[com...

So, let's see the interest level in primroses in these 3 ways:

1) Creating a list of existing threads that demonstrates an urgent, compelling need to pull them all into one forum; and/or

2) Starting threads in an existing forum and if there's enough interest and activity they begin to crowd out the other topics in the forum; and/or

3) Sharing your information and images in PlantFiles, which may be the best way to meet the needs of primrose lovers.

Oops, sorry. I misunderstood. I am going to start putting my primroses on Plant files and see if that generates any interest. Any one else who has some good pics of the more uncommon primrose cultivars, or any other pics you have of primroses, feel free to post them also.

Wonderful idea! I hope your efforts spur others to share their pictures and growing notes, too!!!

Hmmm... maybe I need to add to this thread, even though there's a foot of snow on the ground here. My single favorite primula has always been P. vulgaris ssp. sibthorpii. Since it's from the Balkans, it's much more tolerant of cold winters and especially of our hot, dry summers (which turn most primroses to mush). I've always been jealous of the Brits, who have available in commerce a number of named clones in different shades of pink and white, of this species. However, the ordinary variety is great, too; it just keeps spreading, and I just keep digging up pieces of it and spotting them around the garden, where they take right off. It is covered with flowers every spring, no matter what the weather, and it stays in bloom a long time.

Speaking of primrose, I planted several P. allionii primrose last summer and they did not do well at all over the winter. We have cold wet winters, so maybe they need a drier climate? Does anyone know? I live in western New York right below Lake Ontario in zone 6

I just ordered several primrose seeds from Chiltern's in England. I will let you know how they work out.

Peony Anne - Must be the NY weather! We're in Zones 6/7 & my Mexican primroses (lavender flower) did well last year. It was one of the rainiest on records and I have irrigation to boot so no problems with moisture. This year they expanded exponentially - at least 10 times their original area and are spreading like crazy. A friend said it was due to the "looseness" and richness of my soil of the berm they're in. I got them at Lowe's. Like others, I have spread the joy by digging up a piece and replanting.

Just got a Vial's primrose.

Didn't check before hand ..fingers crossed that there is some deer resistance. Anybody know?
