I think my Mum has weeds

Alton, IL

I was given a Pot Mum as a gift. Despite my best efforts it died. I took it outside and hoped Mother Nature would help me and she did. The only problem is with the wind, etc., I think she deposited some grass or other weeds into my pot. Is this grass, a weed or possibly part of the fresh Mum? Should I pull any thing out? I don't want to risk killing it again.

The tall stuff looks like crabgrass. The little thing coming up in the bottom of the picture that you can't see much of may have a chance to be your mum, but you'll have to post another picture that shows more of it since it could very well be a weed too. I'm not sure what the other seedling is that's coming up right next to your crabgrass--doesn't look especially like a mum to me but I know there are a number of different kinds so maybe yours had a different leaf shape than the ones I'm familiar with.

Thanks. I think the little one is my Mum. Here's a better shot of it. I'll post a second one to show you the other side, I think the other side is a different kind of weed or something. I can pull the crabgrass without hurting the Mum right?

Here's a better shot of what I think is my Mum, but the two on the sides I'm not sure of.

I don't think the plant in the front there is your mum. The one that's behind the crabgrass is the one that looks like it has the same leaf shape as my mums.

As far as pulling the crabgrass--it depends on how well rooted it is. If it pulls out easily then it shouldn't hurt your mums, but I've had a hard time sometimes when crabgrass (or other weeds) have gotten really well rooted in the container, then you tend to pull half the dirt out of the container when trying to remove them which could be bad for the mums if there are any in there.

They all look like weeds to me. And I agree with the poster that pulling the bigger weeds is likely to pull up everything else. I would just pull the grass out, and if the other little unknowns come up with it, gently separate them and replant them. They will be fine, and you will know in a few weeks what they really are.

Thanks all this has been a huge help!!
