Is water temperature a problem?

Atascadero, CA

I am thinking of putting in a drip irrigation system. Our garden is planted in half wine barrels, so soaker hoses won't work. We would be watering in the morning, but when it gets into the 100's it may be necessary to water more than once a day. If we need to water twice a day and the drip hoses are out in the sun, the water within them will be very hot. Will this kill the plants? Any advice? Oh- and how long does drip need to be run in order for the plants to get enough water?

If you bury your tubing the water shouldn't be that hot. Another option would be hand watering them as needed in the afternoons.

As far as your timer goes all I can tell you is it depends because different nozzles release different amounts of water, usually between 1 to 4 gallons per hour. Someone here should be able to give you more specific advice but in the meantime I would suggest talking to a local nursery or garden supply store and see what they have to say.

I have the hot water problem here as well. Even the cold water in my kitchen sink is hot when it first comes out so I would not think that if you bury the tubing that the problem would completely solved in this hot hostile climate. I don't have drip here, I use a bubbler system to simulate irrigation, so that when the hot water comes out it is dispersed over a larger area thus minimizing any possible problem.

Unfortunately I can't easily bury my tubing. Because the garden is in half barrels, some part of the tubing will always be showing. Right now I am watering by hand, but we need to figure something out for when we go out of town(other than begging the neighbors!). That's why I was thinking of drip. We use it in other parts of our yard(where it is buried). The garden drip would be on a separate timer.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.
