ID: what kind of violet? (viola ??)

Minneapolis, MN(Zone 4a)

I'd like to get a native variety of viola for our yard - thinking I didn't get so lucky. I believe we are in a southern mesic prairie/savanna community species. Our soil is sandy and fairly dry from my own simple soil tests.

Can you tell me the scientific name for what this viola is? Thanks!!!

I believe that's Viola odorata.

Also, I'd suggest that you post your pictures to be identified on the Plant ID forum here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/plantid/all/ You'll get a much quicker response that way :)

Thank you, for both. I wish they had breadcrumbs at the top so you could see the tree of threads. I was looking all over for the place to post. I wanted to just do the search myself, but I can't even afford to eat, much less buy a membership right now.

As for the viola, I don't think our smells at all, so I don't think it can be odorata. And I tried to get the image color better, but it really is a pretty dark purple. And there is a tiny bit of orange on the (stamen?), but you practically have to pry the petals open to see it.

The Plant ID forum is one that's open to everyone, so you can post there without paying for a subscription.

I said V. odorata but I was actually thinking of V. sororia. My brain wasn't working with me yesterday :)

yes!!! that's the one! thanks! i tried searching thru wikipedia, but there are SO MANY species of violets to look through.

thanks again!

p.s. before i close this out, does anyone know how to read the abbreviation for the native status in a plants database. MN USDA says this is L48(N), Can(N) - from here: http://plants.usda.gov/java/charProfile?symbol=VISO

ah, so much to learn! thanks!

L48(N) means it's native to somewhere in the lower 48, Can(N) means native to somewhere in Canada. If you are on a page that shows a distribution map, scroll down and look just underneath the distribution map, you'll see in fine print a link to view native status, that will show you a map of the states/provinces that it's native to vs introduced.

thanks, that's what i thought, but i was hoping for more specific info (out of the abbreviation, i mean).

yeah! it's a native violet! (just a little overrun, i'm guessing)
