Hey! I found a bargain at a garage sale Friday afternoon. It's a portable compost bin. It's a stiff piece of dark green plastic which has long metal stakes woven through holes in it. The stakes are driven into the ground to hold the plastic in a circular shape to make a cylinder, and there's a plastic hood which fits over the whole thing. There are airholes punched in the plastic, too.
I don't have it in front of me, but I think it's called a Yard Guard or something like that. Anyone else used a compost bin like this one?
Ummmmm....Now all I have to do is figure out what to put in it, and in what proportions. All we've done by way of composting in the past was pile our chunks of sod and dead plant material in a mound. And that pile had weeds and daffodils growing in it this spring, LOL!
I know we needed a different mix of organics (brown and green, right?) and that it needs to heat up. All that good stuff. Any good sites for the basics of composting -- good step-by-step stuff?
My 50-cent compost bin
Hey, Gardenwife check out the Soil forum - there are several threads on compost "blends"..... :)
Thanks Go_vols! You beat me to it! Sure feels good when the answers are right here in DG!
Yep - one stop shopping, never need to go anywhere else! (Where'd that thread go - the one about Dave's Garden being like the Hotel California, or a "roach motel"!?!?! We check in but never check out :0)
LOL I don't remember which post that one popped out in! But since 3*20*2001 I have only missed 2 days on DG and that was to go see my grandson! He was worth it but if they want to see me again they better get a computer or get me a lap top! :}
Great stuff Kim!! Ahem - compost :-) You can never go far without it!! LOL Zany what did we do before computers!!
