Liliacs-starting a new bushplease help

Growing up my uncle had the most wonderful liliacs. Just the other day I got a starting off a bush. These are the real dark purple liliacs. My Mother has tried to start them many times with no luck. Can anyone tell me the way to start them that they will grow? Are they acid loving plants? I need a gardening book for dummies. I am in a warmer climate than my Mother is.
