Curious If You Could Give Me Any Pointers For Care/& How To Make It Thrive.
I Purchased This For My Mother For Mothers Day From K-Mart...
Was This A Good Purchase ? Me & My Mother Are New To This Type Of Plant. Dont Want To Kill The Plant.
Can I Sit This Outside Yet? Can It Be In Complete Sunlight? As She Has No Shade By Her Apt. I Live In Ohio.S.E.Ohio,
I Was Reading About This On Many Sites On The Internet But Still Unsure Of How To Correctly Care For This Plant.
Thanks For The Information.
Strawberry Sunset (Hibiscus)
Is it a Hardy Hibiscus or a Tropical Hibiscus?
Here's the Plant Files entry for it: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/184441/ It's a tropical, so the most important thing is she'll have to bring it in for the winter. It will probably bloom better if she keeps it outside in the warmer months though. They don't like to dry out too much in between waterings, but make sure not to overwater them either (best thing to do is stick your finger a few inches down into the pot and see how it feels--if it's really wet then don't water any more, but if it's starting to feel dry then it could probably use a drink). And when you fertilize, go for fertilizers that have a lower phosphorus level (the middle number) since hibiscus do not want a lot of phosphorus.
I bought a couple hibiscus myself. After the first one, I don't want to stop. I am waiting to acquire my third. I made a huuuuge mistake with mine. The plant is fine, it is still blooming and blooming but I did suffer some yellowing, dropping leaves for a little while there! The first thing I did wrong was sticking it in a cheap, clumping, potting soil. The other thing I did wrong was to not put a hole in the bottom of the planter. As soon as I saw those yellow leaves, I rushed to buy organic soil and worked the bottom of that pot until I had a good size hole in it!!!
Now then....hibiscus like lots and lots of light!!! It's a full sun plant. They like acidic soil, with peat moss in it. Water them regularly, but definitely do not overwater. I have my plants indoors. If you decide to keep them and bring them in in the winter, you will need a window that recieves a LOT of sun or you will need to supplement your lighting with plant lights.
