Lemon Cucumbers

Waikoloa, HI

We have a pot on our lanai with lemon cucumbers. There are loads of large leaves and lots and lots of yellow flowers but no cucumbers. The plant is now about 4 1/2 feet tall and the leaves and flowers are falling off near the bottom of the plant. What could be our problem? Thanks

Do you see any bees around to pollinate the flowers?

Waikoloa, HI

Oh dear, no. I don't see any bees. We are on the second floor of an apt. complex on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii. I'm not sure I have ever seen a bee here anywhere, or very few.

Do I need bees to make my cucumbers grow?

You can hand pollinate them.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

You can either locate male flowers, carefully pull off the petals, and rub them onto the female flowers (the flowers with a small fruit behind them). Ideally you want multiple male to one female.

Or you can use a paintbrush to transfer pollen.

Thanks for all the good advice. Wonders of wonders......we saw a bee this morning on our cucumber plant.

Since this is the beginner column......how long after the plant has been pollinated will we see cucumbers?

Aloha
Judy
