Pea Spacing

Lloydminster, AB(Zone 2a)

I'm having trouble finding out what a good spacing is between rows of peas. I've read online anything from 6 feet to 1 foot. Another suggestion was to plant them as far apart as you expect them to grow upwards.

Any advise?

What kind of peas? English peas(Pisum sativum) will grow in very dense plantings. Typically they are drilled at about 2 inches apart in the row. Dwarf cultivars are frequently planted in double rows 8-12 inches between the rows. 2 -3 ft between the sets of double rows,so you can get to pick them. If you use a pea picker (mechanical harvester) drilled in 12 inch rows works fine. Tall vining cultivars , you have to add more room to access the trellises. Southern (Vigna unguicalata) peas need a lot more space. Depending on cultivar 3-12 inch spacing in 3-4 ft rows. I am thinking that you not considering Chickpeas.

Last year I put three rows of Sugar Snaps in a 4' wide bed and they grew taller than I am (5' 7") - this year - the birds ate em! - Actually, I have one Sugar Snap vine that the birds didn't eat and it's about 5' high.
