I purchased some asparagus roots on sale, but want to plant them next year. Will they be OK or is it better to plant them now? How can I store them if I can wait?

You need to get them into something so they don't die. They won't last forever.
After you do plant them, they need 2-3 years to get good growth before harvesting. So I wouldn't wait. Get them in the space you want them and hopefully you'll enjoy fresh Asparagus in 2 years!
We planted 50 roots this year. So far only 14 have sprouted with stalks and of the 14 it looks like one of them just died :(

Qinx is right--you need to get them planted as soon as possible to keep them alive. I don't know of any way to preserve roots for a whole year without planting them. Here's a site with some info on growing asparagus:
