soaking beans

Berkeley, CA(Zone 9a)

How long should I soak bean seeds before planting them. Also, I thought I remembered someone explaining which "side" should go down.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

I only soaked mine over night and didnt pay particular attention to which side was where.. and they all sprouted.. all 33 of them

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Everything I've heard is to NOT soak beans. I do wet mine just before planting.

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

well.. I followed the instructions on the pack they came is... and they did just fine

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I soaked mine in blood meal overnight and they sprouted just fine.

I never soak beans, or any seeds 'cause I do things on the spur-of-the-moment and it's not possible to soak retroactively :)

ROTFL... "not possible to soak retroactively".. I love that.

I do soak my pepper and tomato seeds in a weak tea (literally a spent teabag) and seaweed (just a tiny splash of maxicrop) solution. This requires having about a dozen little bowls set up. I soak the seeds for ~1 hour, plant, put the next batch of seeds to soak and wait 1 hour. This would be really difficult if you are growing over 30-40 varieties.

cue-chik made me laugh when I typed it, too :)

feldon30 - your patience is commendable.

I tried soaking some scarlet runners overnight and while they swelled to monstrous proportions (1-1/2" beans folks) none of them sprouted after planting. I threw my last 3 (unsoaked) in a pot full of crappy soil and all three have sprouted in under a week. In general I never soak any seeds. I just toss them in a pot or jiffy pellet and see what happens. Rough estimate is 90-95% germination rate.
