What kind of vegetable vine is this?

Hey folks,

This is my first post on here....I'm new here...

This vine came up out of my compost heap. I've actually got three big plants and i've let lots of seedlings die. I don't know what kind it is, and don't recognize it. I thought it was a tomato at first, but its leaves don't smell strongly.

Anyway this is the flower....

Any help is appreciated.

I am not going to hazard a guess on the plant, but I had the same issue about the one photo rule when I started. I questioned those who must be obeyed and the reply was succinct, polite and reasonable. Essentially there are many users here who still use dial-up and loading lots of photos into a post makes it very slow to load for them. It was suggested that using photo software one could stitch photo's together, but there is still a size limit to the photo. Yeah, its a drag. But I do understand. There is probably a savings for the site owner as well in terms of conserving bandwidth, but I couldn't attest to that.

Yup, they look like potatoes to me, too. Once the flowers have died, and leaves start to die back, you should have a few spuds to dig for dinner!

WOW!!!! You have potatoes growing in your compost heap!!!! I once had tomato seeds germinate in mine! I did not grow the plant because with all the breeds and cross breeds, I wasn't sure I would get fruit.

*G*. I always let "volunteers" grow. Think of all the money made every year by people who SELL hybrid tomatoes! You never know what you'll get, it might be the new "SuperMater". I've always gotten some kind of fruit from the plants, but some of it didn't look anything like any tomato i'd had growing. Of course, I also let volunteer squash/melon/whatever crosses grow, and that produces some interesting results....

catmad, I let the volunteers grow, too. Sometimes they do better than the seeds I sow. Last year I didn't sow a single cucumber seed, but still had more cucs than I knew what to do with! Looks like I have some volunteer melons coming up this year, plus a few tomatoes.

Definitely the solanum family, probably a potato. If you ever see something like this with purple flowers, it is a poisonous weed (only if you eat it) but in the same family as tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants. BTW, if you cut the eye out of a store bought potato, and give it to a child, and let them plant if, it will grow like crazy. I used to teach science to little ones, and they loved it. It's practically foolproof, and we used to have a contest to see who could grow the tallest potato plant. Since I taught in a city ghetto, there was little light, so we got some VERY tall potato plants.

Nice photos. I've grown potatoes a few times now and have yet to see any bloom. Does anyone know how common it is for them to actually flower? And do certain varities have a better chance of flowering?

All my potatoes flower. I pick the blossoms off. My red potatoes have purple blossoms and the white ones have white. Nutcase (I feel rude calling you names!) what color blossoms do your red potatoes have?

My green bean leaves look healthy except they are a light green not dark like they are suppose to be, anyone know what I need to do. They are planted in my corn, they are stripped half runners.
Thanks

Sorry I got this in wrong place it should have been a new question.
