Here's my shady area again with the plants from the swap put in....I'd do a split screen comparison but I'm on my laptop.
The Long View 2009
You can see to the right in my after pic the poor little half weedwacked solomon's seal.
Do wacked plants grow back better like pinching back annuals to make them bushy?
I sure hope so!!!!
In post 6574553 What's the taller plant behind the heuchera?
Goats Beard. A form of giant astilbe. I just love it as a background for other plants. This long garden is 75 feet long and 10-15 feet wide with old spruces dividing the whole thing.
I planted tall plants between the trees and realized I have nearly cut the view of my new sibs and JI's.
I also just planted Actaea Brunette on one side of the GB
and Actaea Hillside Black Beauty on the other.Those are dark black purple leafed plants.Looks great with the persicaria Red Dragon
Do goats beard kinda peter out as it gets older like astilbe does?
Yes I think so.
I had one at my old house that was divided after 10 years, the divisions perked up and looked great where I moved them.
The parent plant died out due to too much shade,neighbors tree just made a dense canopy over it.
It takes about 20 years for the plant to exhaust itself.
That's a long time, so I wouldn't need to worry I'll lose it soon....that is what is keeping me from planting astilbe.
Goat's Beard likes some shade, although ours gets the morning sun. The flowers are not as full as astilbe & are white. I also have a dwarf form (DH doesn't like it for some reason). I bought it from Roots & rhizomes. they haven't listed it for the last couple of years. Perhaps it didn't sell well enough.
AHA! I wonder if that's what's wrong with some of my astilbes. They need dividing! I like the dapply light in your shady area flowerjen.
I have read on numerous occasions that astilbe should be divided every 3-5 years in order to keep performing well. So give it a try and see if they perk up.
astibles peter out huh.... learn something new everyday... I had no idea
They do if theyre rootbound and overgrown.
They like lots of water too.
thank you.... another thing I have to try and remember
Ahhhhhmemory loss,something I deal with all the time.
yeah well... it happens
:)
I knew about the water, but not that they petered out. I got 4 'fanal' at the grocery store last year on SALE, thought they didn't make it through the winter, but they all came back. I love red.
yummy
I've never experienced the petering out as long as its needs were met.
~~~snort!~~~~
Victor!
Hee hee - I did not even mean it that way! I really was referring to astilbes.
Yeah right!
The ones that are 'petering' aren't crowded in the least and they get their fair share of poop and compost. I will dig them up after they bloom to see how their roots are cuz maybe they're tangly. Ok who wants to take the blame if I kill them when I do that?
I'm serious! Would love to take credit for that one, but can't. And what does that say about my reputation?!!
dnut - enough moisture and shade?
BLUESTONE 1/2 PRICE SALE IS ON.
Victor the two that are petering are right beside a bird bath and late afternoon sun only. They have been there for 6 years though so I think the dividing trick may be the answer.
What an impressive long view Songs.Its just wonderfu.
What variety are those astilbs.
Songs I can't believe that's your yard...just gorgeous!!!!!
Songs, That is incredibly beautiful. Great Job!
very very very nice!!
Thanks all. I've posted that one a few times so it's not recent. Haven't gotten may pics this year yet. I'll try this weekend to get more current long shots.
