Is it possible to grow organic from not organic seeds or trees? I mean add organic ingredients to the soil, compost. And what do you think about 3 in 1, 5 in 1 ....trees with very large fruits, are they safe? I found some fruit trees, looks and sounds really amazing. What do you think? http://www.houseofwesley.com/detail.asp?pid=6123
from not organic to organic?!
For the growing organic things from non-organic seeds...it depends on what you're growing them for. If you're trying to grow produce that you want to sell and call organic, then it may matter what sort of seeds you use. But if you're just growing things for yourself then you can definitely use organic growing practices with seeds that are not certified organic and feel good about the things that you grow.
There's nothing unsafe about the 3-in-1, etc trees...all they did was take a few different varieties of fruit and graft them all onto one rootstock. Many fruit trees are grafted anyway, so they just took it one step further and did multiple grafts. If you want a variety of different fruits and don't have a lot of space, it's a great way to get more fruit without having to plant 5 different trees.
That's good to know, ecrane, thanks for answering about the trees. I agree with the answer about the seeds, too.
But the seeds been taken from non-organic plants and trees been treated with chemicals?! Is it right? Or the chemicals go away after certain time?
Most of the chemicals would have been on the surface of the original fruit/veggie and wouldn't have gotten into the seeds in the first place. And if some teensy amount did make it through to the seed, it's not going to transmit much of anything into the fruits/veggies of the plant that you grow from it. I think your risk is VERY minimal if you use organic techniques to grow it once you sow it. As I mentioned, if you're trying to grow crops that you want to certify organic for sale then you may need to use organic seed, but for the average person who's trying to keep synthetic pesticides out of their food, I doubt you'd get any measurable amount of nasty stuff in your fruits/veggies even with non-organic seed...what's much more critical is what you put in your soil as the plants are growing. Of course if you're really committed to organic practices, then you may want to spend your money with seed companies who share your values and grow things organically, but strictly from the standpoint of avoiding nasty residue, etc on your plants you'd be fine either way.
Thank you! I feel better now :)
