Here's my problem. Looking for some help. Not having much
luck. I have a salt water pool. Near the shallow end, where
the salt water splashes out, over a wall that is about 5 ft
high, all the shrubs have died. It's an area about 25ft
long. I have been searching for a shrub that will flower, is
evergreen if possible and can handle the salt. I've been
reading about Glossy Abelia, (Abelia Grandiflora). Can
anybody out there help? I live in Atlanta, GA Zone 7.
in search of salt tolerant plants
Your problem is quite a dilemma. I also have a salt problem - Salt Air. Living in a condo with the balcony facing the ocean and Intracoastal (salty water). It is hard to find plants that can tolerate the salty air. But your problem - is even greater - I don't know of many plants that could withstand an actual salt bath all the time !!!
What I would do if I were you is do a search of plant life at beaches. However, most of the ones I have seen here in So. Florida are actually grasses. . .
If I can think of any after I post this to you - I will come back and re-post my findings to you.
I to have a salt water pool but all my plants are in pots and not subject to constant salt water spraying, I also have four acres of garden that every five years or so are floded by huricanes with salt water, the plants that have survived these contions are, crepe myrtles, most of the palm trees, grases, cana lilies, japanes quince, illy agnes ,I also have a large salt water pond but nothing grows their except along the banks siberian iris, and sea shore mallow, living on a barrier island, ive lost alot of plants that are not salt tolerant,i doubt if any of the plants ive mentioned could withstand aconstant drenching of salt water,LOL hoitider
In Bermuda Oleanders grow wild on some of the little islands which have salt spray blowing over them often. They even look pretty happy! They are evergreen in Bermuda and nearly so here.
There is a section in the Western Garden Book that lists salt tolerant plants. Not sure if there is an eastern equivalent.
