Here's my problem. Looking for some help. Not having much
luck. I have a salt water pool. Near the shallow end, where
the salt water splashes out, over a wall that is about 5 ft
high, all the shrubs have died. It's an area about 25ft
long. I have been searching for a shrub that will flower, is
evergreen if possible and can handle the salt. I've been
reading about Glossy Abelia, (Abelia Grandiflora). Can
anybody out there help? I live in Atlanta, GA Zone 7.
in search of salt tolerant plants
Here's a nice list--it's for Florida so you may have to check the hardiness on things to make sure they'll work for you http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/EP012
However, you also need to keep in mind that your water isn't just salt water, it also has chlorine in it so even plants that can handle salt may not be able to handle chlorine being splashed on them all the time. The salt level in salt water pools isn't that high (about 10x less salty than the ocean) so I'm not sure what proportion of your problems is due to salt and what's due to chlorine. So I'd probably see if you can find a few inexpensive plants that are on the salt tolerant list and try those out to see if that fixes the problem, but you may instead need to look for a solution to keep the water from splashing out, or put something in that area besides a garden bed.
