Jo Ann..... it's 4:15 am. This is early even for you!!!
Garden Photos of '09.... #18
Go0od morning Shelly!
I woke up at 3AM
I'm having some neighbor ladies in for brunch and get caught up on the neighborhood news.
Its the first time I've had neighbors in so I'm excited.Couldnt sleep, trying to remember what I'm going to serve. They bring stuff too so it will be fun.
I cant get over how the Blue Angel's are shooting out of the ground.
There is a plant you sent that is a surprise fave of mine,Viols Odorata,I think thats what the label said.
The leaves are wonderful.
When I first saw it I remember the violets that grew at my old house and how no matter what I did I couldnt get rid of them.
I put your Violet in the ground with some reservation but now I realize its not the same plant.
I hope yours spreads,does it?
Yes, it will spread... but I find it very controleable. If the sun comes out today, I'll take a picture of some of mine. I love them. I so hope that you do to! But, if not, they're easy to pull. I'm glad that the hosta finally has it's feet on the ground!
It sounds as if you have a fun day ahead of you. I think that it's great to be so excited about brunch!! that's fantastic!!
Actually.... I think that I sent you the wrong name with that violet :-( Sorry. I always confuse the two. I do have odorata, but it's in the back yard (sunny side) and i think that I intentially stayed in the front yard for the shade plants. Which means that it's this violet instead. Take a look and tell me what you think!! http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1417/
Everything that I said still holds true because I'd been talking about that plant the whole time, regardless of my forgetful name of it.

That looks like it but no flowers yet to really tell what the vafiety is.
The leaves are young on my plant so they havnt turned green anywhere. They are the darl purple color, Glad I have it in semishade.
I planted it near a Ghost fern and will put an epimedium with it when the epi. comes."Dark Beauty" chocolate leaves.
If the Viola goes anywhere it will be under some Hosta Blue Cadet and the epimedium and fern, that wont bother me one bit.
Shelly: I think that Ligularia is dentata Britt Marie Crawford.
But I could be mistaken!
I think, after seeing everyone's photos of them, I need to get me a dogwood in the yard this year.
Anyone have a suggestion on their Favorite Dogwood?
I really need to get more spring flowers in the works.
The Flowering Crabapple is not enough. Though, the town in which I live, Cheektowaga, "Land of the Crabapples" ( JI-IK-DO-WAH-GAH ), was named by the Seneca Native Americans referring to the apple-like fruit of the Hawthorn trees abundantly growing in the area.
what a great job you did Boo.... the yard is beautiful
love that last shot RC
Willie, I never knew the meaning of Cheektowaga...have live there in the past)...cool!
Shelly, pretty pics. I have been planning on getting a dogwood for several years and can never decide where to put it. But I want one BAD. I've had my eye on one of the C. kousa's, possibly 'Venus' (anybody have it?), or a pink flowering variety.
nice!... that's amazing I love the falls.. been there quite a few times
Thanks Allison!
I just see that the Got Epis website is down as he prepares for his annual sale.
The site should be back up at some time today, when the sale starts!!!!
I know I shouldn't, but YOU know I will be getting some!!

Great dogwood shots, Shelly. Love that last one. Yes - the ligularia is Britt.
Very nice shot, Willie.
willie what color flower do you want - white check out venus or some of the kousa's - pink check our satomi
I just ordered satomi last week. ^_^
Thanks, Victor!
I am thinking a white for the backyard and a pink in the front where the flowering crabapple is.
satomi is perfect, actually. And, I think that would flower around the same time as the crabapple. Maybe it would be better to get a different color? Maybe white? Not sure about colors clashing.
I see Summer Fun:

I like the variegation .... would help to break up all the green in the backyard.
No problem, Will. Satomi is a kousa dogwood so it will bloom well after the crabapples. Later May into June.
We were talking about chainsaws recently. A guy in MI was cutting a tree yesterday when he accidentally hit his wife in the neck, killing her. Ugh.
willie check out greers garden web site for dogwoods - they have a bunch listed - i got three there last year all kousa - radiant rose (pink), moonbean (white 8' flowers) and beni fuji (a deeper pink than satomi) - i already have three satomi so it is safe to say i like them:)
rarefind has the white venus and the pic alone is worth a view.
Why was she standing so close??? Nasty way to die.
Was it an accident??? I love dogwoods, too----we planted some on the town green we refurbished---I think it was 'Cherokee' but not sure----Booj---love the barn & yard shots---can't wait to see them in person. Allison, lucky you with the hummers! I had a northern parula warbler on the apple tree a few days ago, along with a black-throated green warbler, & 2 male indigo buntings in another apple---now the blossoms are gone, decimated by yesterday's wind.
O WOW lots of beauties to catch up on. The JMS and rhodies are outstanding right now!
Thanks folks! I can never get enough of the dogwoods!
Willie... my favorite white ones are 'national' and 'moonbeam', but there's lots of pretties!
favorite pink, probably 'beni fuji'
for variegated ones I love 'snowboy' and 'Kristin Lipkin'
Victor's definitely right about when the Kousa Dogwoods blooming in late may and june. The florida's and Nuttallii's are in bloom now. But, I don't personally have any of the florida dogwoods due to the issue with athracnose, and here that can definitely be an issue.
Victor.... Wow, interesting story. Nasty story. Thanks for sharing it!! i was have the same questions as others here. For one... was it an accident??? For two.... Why on earth was she standing so close and why did the sawyer actually have the saw in motion with someone standing so close??? It I know that you can't answer those! i'm just sort of pondering this 'out loud' so to speak.
Love that jubilee Willie!
Jo Ann.... thanks for the picture. Yep. that's the Labrador violet. I have some with pink flowers and some with purple flowers, then a few that nature hybrized between the two of them. my guess is that yours is the one with purple flowers.
Thanks Shelly I'll change the tag
Boojum, I love your new plant wall, more pots to water, your favorite passtime! But they will be amazing. I am hoping to get by for an "up close and personal view" soon.
WNyWillieB, Your Jerry's Jubilee is to die for, while mine just sit in the pots and do nothing.
Onewish1, I keep having one wish that I get just one. Hummers are so special. Not one ever.
karen, thank for looking at picasa, it is so much easier than posting pictures one by one. But I will post a couple today.
I am pleased with this viola though in this picture you can't really see the splashed white foliage. V.'Fuji Dawn' Patti
Wow Patti I cant wait for next spring when my Dwarfs bloom.
Thats a beauty
Very nice, Patti. How is Nellie with the plants? Bummer on the hummers.
Patti...nice photos! I had a fuji dawn violet a few years back and the deer demolished it :-( I haven't seen one since to replace it, that was a reasonable price anyhow. One place had a 4" container of it for $15!!! I just couldn't justify that. Winnie and Nellie are sweet
Thanks for the link Victor. Knowing that he was falling a tree instead of cutting up one that was already down does make an accident much more plausible. And a very unfortunate and harsh reminder about being to close to folks operating saws or trees falling.
Ya know what I was thinking...she might have said something to him and not realizing how close she was, turned around and said "what?" and got her that way. I did that to hubby with an iron in my hand and got his arm, nice 3rd degree burn.
That's exactly what I was thinking Jen--Very sad story :-((
