Apple tree only bears ONE fruit every year!

Chicago, IL

My dad & I have a beautiful apple tree in our back yard that stands at probably 15 feet high. It is healthy and green, and doesn't look like it's having any problems. Every year, it only bears one or two apples, and we have no idea why or how to make it yield more fruit. Advice, please!

Could be that you're getting freezing weather at just the right time so that you get few apples. When we moved to this house we got one or two apples if we were lucky from two mature trees. Now that the weather is warmer here we get over a hundred pounds. I know quite a few people in here who have had the same results with their apple trees. Have you had freezes when the trees were in bloom or shortly after?

Or perhaps it needs another cultivar for pollination ?

Does it flower well?

What kind of apple tree is it? Certain apple trees need other ones around it to pollinate. We got smart and read the card on our tree and found out that it didn't need another to help.

Is it a dwarf or standard? Dwarfs will bear at a much younger age than standards.

I hand-pollinated our apple tree last year and it produced many more fruit than previously. (Now, they all fell off before getting anywhere near ripe, but that's another issue.)
