volunteer crepe myrtles too close together?

Austin, TX

Hi, first question from me. Love reading all your comments to each other and your generally supportive attitudes.

I have a 8-10 year-old crepe myrtle doing well in a bed. Last summer, in the same bed, I put four bi-color irises. In digging the holes for these, we knicked the roots of the CM. Now, right in the middle of each of the irises, there is a 2-3 foot tall CM shoot. They are 3-5 feet away from their "elder." Two questions:

1) Can crepe myrtles all prosper so close together? If they can, I think that I would love the look...
2) Can the irises survive with a crepe myrtle growing smack in the middle of them?

PS: dp72, please be nice. I'm a Texan too, if that makes any difference.

Hi, KatieJohnsonius. I guess my first question is what type of crepe mrytle do you have now, and more important...how big is it? Five feet apart might be okay depending on the height and width of the mama. Anything closer than that might make you unhappy as they mature. If you decide that you can't have them that close, you might as well try to transplant the babies a little farther away - what have you got to lose?

Irises are tough - I'd think they'd be fine although dividing them in a few years might be a headache! Good luck whatever you decide to do - are you in north or south Austin?
