I've been following some threads about planting around trees and doing shade gardens, and it got me wanting to put some things under the only tree on our property. I'd especially love a bleeding heart and some coral bells. Anyway, I don't really feel like digging up grass, so I was wondering if I could put a lasagna style bed around the tree, or would it harm the tree?
Could you do a lasagna bed around a tree?
You need to be careful piling up too much over the root zone, some trees don't like that. So I guess it depends on how thick you anticipate the final lasagna bed would be. If you just layer on enough newspaper to kill the grass that shouldn't do any harm, but if you're planning on building up a lot of layers it could be more problematic.
