Weed or Veg

Winchester, CA

We moved into a new house last nov and the previous owner had a veg garden. We thought we cleared everything out and then these two plants started growing. We are newbies and before we start yanking them out we wanted to make sure they weren't vegs. Thanks for you input!!!!

ok, Im no expert however... Im not sure what plant 1 is, but plant 2 looks a little like squash? Watermelon? possibly-remotely cucumber?

Plant 1 could be mint... and my experience with mint is that even the smallest piece can survive and takeover a garden! And I agree that plant 2 is a squash of some sort. They look healthy though :)

You could always pot up the one on the left, esp. if it is a mint. That stuff is so invasive!!

Plant 1 does look like something in the mint family. Plant 2 looks very much like the cantaloupe plant currently in my garden. If you plan on veggies there anyway, I would let 'em grow and see what you get. I have to agree with the above that if Plant 1 is mint, you may want to keep your eye on it and pot it up as it WILL take over the garden - lol.

A beneficial plant growing where you don't want it = a weed

Plant #2 looks like a geranium to me. No idea about Plant #1

I agree with feldon... I would get them both out of there if I had plans for the space and they aren't what I intended to grow. Even if #2 is a tasty squash/melon/cucumber I'd still rid my garden of it so I know for sure what I have growing.
